Installing Ipod Cable

I have a pioneer head unit and I'm going to buy the Ipod cable for it a little later, but it's in the rear. After I attach it where can I run it or what do I need to do to have access to it?

gen 3? There are a few places depending on how clean you want it...You can put it in the compartment under the HU if you still have it...or you can run it out where the ashtray is. or you can do what i did and mount it where the hand brake would be, if you have that space available....

Yea it is a gen 3. But to mount it in any of these places would drilling be required? And if so, what should I use to drill through the material?

you could drill a hole to put the cable into the compartment, or just use a dremel. Same with the spot i have mine, you just have to drill into the plastic piece where the cable mounts, or comes out.

I got the cable a while ago. I'll try to do the install tomorrow. Where do you run the cables to get it to the e-brake. I'm not sure which panels they need to go through.

I see you have the IDA-X001, what do you think about it? I had been looking at an Alpine digital media receiver (what the CD-less head units are being called) for my Honda Accord, but I don’t have an iPod, I just wanted something with a USB port. The radio I have in my Camry has a front-mounted USB port, I listen to stuff off of it probably 95% of the time I’m in the car. I’ll probably end up with the Alpine CDA-9886 which has a rear mounted USB port… which I would probably run to the glove box. And the main problem I see with having your iPod where it is would be that it’s vulnerable, if something falls on it can’t the plug break?

For what it’s worth, Alpine has recently come out with three new digital media receivers, the iDA-X100, iDA-X200, and iDA-X300, with the X100 being the "best" and the X300 being the "budget" model. Clarion also has a couple digital media receivers so others besides Alpine are now going CD-less.

I just got it on Friday....so far, so good. No issues. I chose to stay with alpine so I would not have to get a new harness...this was totally plug in play with my old CDA-7897 (which i loved). As for the plug breaking....its just a cable i turned into a dock....i doubt its gonna break easily since its mounted in place, and the cable never moves. and if it does...ill just get a new cable. I mount is kind of hidden in the back of that space too, so its not really easy to mess with. Here is another thread with better pics of it. and of my old stereo.

As Promised. New Pics of iPod holder and Cracked Tail light for a year..lol and more!

You mean CDA-7897, right? That was a $600* unit from Crutchfield when it first came out in June of ’02. And yes, having head units play .mp3s was a giant leap in technology and brought an end to the CD changer. The FantomFace (where it hides to make it look like the faceplate has been removed) was interesting but I always wondered how well the motor that extends the faceplate would hold up over time.

Why did you get rid of it? Did you just want to upgrade or was there a problem?

For what it’s worth I still have a CD changer in my ’99 Honda Accord, I bought it for about $450 (an Alpine) in October ’98, installed it myself. I’d sell it but it’s only worth $25 or $30 on ebay – at that price I’d rather just keep it.

* Adjusted for inflation, $600 in ’02 is worth $704 in ’07 and $450 in ’98 is worth $580 in ’07. Can you imagine paying $700 for that head unit today? But at the time it was the latest, greatest thing.

I loved that thing....but the motor would act weird, and sometimes the face wouldnt go back into the dash, and when i tried to guide it back in, the arms that flip the face out, popped off, and i cant get them back on.

I paid $325 for mine in 04' ebay, just the HU. Nothing else. The guy said you HAD to use an external amp because he cut the wires off the harness, but i just soldered them back on, and it worked fine.

The CD player stopped working too, but I havent used a CD since getting my iPod cable in my car.

Did the install yesterday. I decided to just get the auxiliary cable because the firedog guy at circuit city told me I needed to buy a whole bunch of other parts to get the deck to actually charge the Ipod and the auxiliary cable was way cheaper.

Here are pics with the psp (Ipod was dead and being able to charge it would have come in handy). I saw a little opening when I took out the headunit which is why I have the cord coming out on the passenger side. I'll try to make it cleaner when I have more time, but since I need access to the Ipod I guess the glove compartment isn't an option.

yea, my iPod gets charged because i bought a cable from PIE.

it has the iPod interface, and two wires you hardwire to your harness, and it charges your iPod. Just go on eBay and look for iPod Aux Cable Charger or something like that, and you will find something that will work.

I like the IPOD where the ebrake goes. What did you do with the ebrake?
