3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
during the last 2 weeks i have starting problems. sometimes it would start and run fine and sometimes it would not start. when it doesnt start, i just come back in a bit and try again then it works.
here are the codes that i got:
P0340 - Camshaft position sensor A - Bank 1 Circuit Malfunction
P0401 - EGR Flow Insufficient
P0773 - Shift Solenoid E. Circuit Eletrical
any help in fixing this would be nice.
I need to know what to buy, diagnose and how to fix it.
the two last codes are no worry, as they won't prevent your car from starting
get the first code fixed. it sounds like the camshaft position sensor is done for.
When it says bank one, it means the front bank (which is actually the one close to he firewall)
I know where the crankshaft sensor is on the rear bank, but I'm not sure on the front bank...that, and it'd be a bitch to get to for sure. You can either go to your local dealership and get a price on a camshaft position sensor and ask them where it is and change it yourself, or you can take it to a shop to have it dealt with ....I would recommend T-Lex since you're toronto.

do u have the number for T-Lex and where is he located?
Basil is a great guy. I don't like ppl touching my car, but when I need something done that I can't do myself, I take it to him.
as for cost...I don't see it being too much for labor hopefully...the sensor though...that's what might cost you. just give him a call and tell him the code and then he'll have suggestions for you and usually a general price. more often than not though, he'll ask you to bring your car in to have a look and then he'll tell you what needs to be done.

was it in the same location on the rear as on the front?
as for the oil sludge....if there's enough to gunk up the sensor...you may want to take your valve covers off to get a look at the buildup in your engine, as that's not a good sign...

i didnt check the rear cause it said bank 1 so i only did the front plus i dont where the rear is located.
if i do take the valve covers off and see a lot of sludge. what can i do? do i just take it off to look at it and put it back?
lol...well...you see....bank one is actually the bank that's by the firewall....the one on the front is actually technically the rear bank....
but yeah, the cam sensor on the front of the car is easy to deal with. I guess you got lucky and the code just kinda went away by itself then.
As for what to do if you do see sludge? Clean it up as best as you can while the valve cover's off. Then run a bottle of seafoam through your engine oil, dump, run, dump and it should get a decent bit of the sludge out

its buried in the bowels of the motor in the rear beneath the plenum if you want to try it you will need to mount the motor and reach down best to tow it to T-lex

basil is the guy who owns t-lex, so just ask for him when somebody picks up the phone.
also, try resetting the light by pulling the battery and it may at least let you drive the car to the shop...but I'm not too sure if that's a good idea either. CAA would probably be a good choice at this point lol.
