crazy idle

i pulled into my drive way and my car started idling between 1500 and 2000 rpms, then it stayed at 2000 rpms in park. i put it in drive and it dropped to 1100 rpms. i drove around and there was a slight hesitation on acceleration. i just did spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, and pcv valve. last weekend. i shut the car off 2 times with no change, then the 3rd time it was back 2 normal at 750 rpms. what could be the problem??? 2.2l auto 96 camry le 4dr
100,000 miles.

the following things I would check

does the RMP go up and down while u're in Park or Drive (at dead stop)

1) make sure your throttle body clean (sure not stuck)..do a search on this forum for more info. clean throttle body
2) if the throttle body clean does not fixed your problem..
3) the (idle) sensor that control RMP to adjust accordingly near the MAP sensor on the throttle body go bad..

Maybe 96camry is right about the throttle body, if the butterfly is crudded up and sticking to the plenum this could make your crazy idle. Its easy to fix and it probably needs cleaning anyways so just clean it and see what happens
