Goodbye O/D button

so, I was trying to install a new shifter that I got a while ago.. but that didnt fit to well.. after pulling my old shifter out, the cables of course had to be teared and broken. Then when I try to put back the older shift that didnt work to well... cuz it doesn't fit for some reason? The button to push down the shifter to move it around isn't working. So right now I'm shiftless haha.. it exactly looks better than the fat old shifter but it hurts the thumb >_> so I need to find a new shifter...

Well i CAN still do the O/D again cuz the remaining wires are still attached to the car. So i'll just have to do some wire management if I ever go back to O/D but since I never really used O/D I dont think its useful. Beside I don't want to make my car run harder then it already is :P O/D is for i4's hehe V6 don't need an extra push!

Right now I hope I didnt break the shifter or anything.. cuz I did do 2 hard pushes down when I tried to put the older one back.. (just 2!) It works still but you'll never know internally...

O/D is good for highway use regardless of i4 or v6.

FYI, O/D is more for fuel economy than extra power... like Black95Cam said, good for highway use. however, if you need more power to get up a hill for example, turning O/D off will kick it back down to a lower gear.

wait wah? I read on the camry manual book that O/D can waste gas.. and not good for the use of fuel economy.. that is why its always off.

Well the O/D is off as the light didnt lit on my dash.. so no harm to my engine :P I just won't be able to use it hehe.. but oh well..

no, running with o/d off will make the engine stay in third gear at cruising speeds, overdrive is just another gear. Not an engine mode or anything, it's just your 4th gear control

if your O/D light is on, then your O/D is off and the car wont shift out of third. i did the same thing with my shifter and had to drive around without the switch, but the O/D was off since its the button which when depressed closes the circuit and turns the O/D off. removing teh button or disconnection the O/D leads just keeps the O/D circuit open.

Yeah, if your O/D off light is displayed, then the highest gear you can be in is third. I'd much rather have O/D on all the time rather than off.

if your "O/D off" light displayed, will it harm your vehicle if you're always using it?

if "O/D" is lit on your instrument cluster then your overdrive is off. this means you WONT shift into overdrive "4th gear", and the car will be running at higher RPMs. this can ware on third gear over time as well as workin the engine harder, but most of all it will eat gas like crazy.

i do turn it off from time to time but thats only to have a little more control over the tranny if im goin through the twisties or trying to take advantage of my now higher RPM power band.

so if the "O/D" didn't lit on the instrument cluster, it means your overdrive is ON? and running at a lower RPMs?

If O/D is not lit, then overdrive is on. Meaning the car can shift into 4th gear if necessary.

3 rd ger is 1:1 ratio meaning the engine turns the trans one revolution and the trans turn the input to the diff one revolution. o/d is 4th gear and is 0.706:1 the engine turns less then one rev to turn the trans out put one rev, it lets the engine turn slower therby saving gas and wear and tear on your engine etc. just like 3rd gear makes the engine turn slower then second gear over drive does the same for you, its geared so high that you the car doesnt accelerate or go into that gear when your under acceleration its strictly a hiway gas saving gear.

btw here are your gear ratios (hopefully this is right...lol)
A140E
4 Speed Automatic Transaxle
Applications:
  • 1983-2001 Camry (4 cyl.)
  • 1994-1999 Celica GT
  • 1999-2001 Solara (4 cyl.)
Gear ratios: 1st - 2.810:1 2nd - 1.549:1 3rd - 1.000:1 4th - 0.706:1 Rev - 2.296:1
