improved MPG

I was only getting 27-28 MPG highway and with the price of gas headed towards $4 bucks, I decided to do a major tune-up.
I replaced with Toyota OEM parts ordered from Toyota of Dallas
After using SeaFoam to clean it out (TB/ IAC), I replaced:
ETC Sensor
Both O2 Sensors
Dist Cap & Rotor
New Spark Plup Wires
And a new set of NGK BKR6EP11 plugs.
I just finished a roundtrip of 350 miles nearly all freeway and running 65-70 MPH. I refueled at the same pump, same time of day, and stopped on the second click of the pump handle ( same as the first fill-up).
DRUM ROLL............. Now....34.5 MPGHighway!
I must say that I was by myself, and it was 60deg. so did this W/O the A/C.
I know this was alot of money to invest, but at todays gas price, It won't take long to recoupe it.

Bear95, I too am considering something similar for my 95 I-4. I am curious if you knew your ETC Sensor and both O2 Sensors were bad or if you just decided to go ahead and replace aging parts. Either way, what was your logic? Also, I would be curious if you did this one step at a time if you noticed more improvement from any particular item(s)?

Thanks,
Kep

Mine is indeed an I-4 with 205/65 R15 tires set @ 31lbs of pressure.
I knew from research that when the ECT starts getting some age it tends to read high causing a rich burn. I had replaced Both O2 sensors @ 50,000 miles and it made a great difference then. I had used Bosch ones that I bought at Autozone. Now that I have passed 100,000 it was time to replace them again. I found out that the OEM parts were not that much more than what is for sale at Autozone.
Toyotapartsales.com has the best price..believe me I have checked and save about $50 using them.

upper O2 sensor 94.01
lower O2 sensor 99.12
ECT sensor 41.22
Dist Cap 9.10
Rotor 5.94
Wire set 52.00
shipping 18.00
total 319.39
My car runs so much better and cheaper!
Bear

Also, I forgot to mention that I changed my air filter, again OEM and I have used Syn. oil for the past 8 years.

3rd Generation

Hi Bear95,

I'm in the process of carrying out a tune-up for my 5sfe camry. I can't seem to find the ETC or ECT sensor at Toyotapartsales.com. What is the function of this part? Thanks!

ECT Sensor = Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, but I also can’t find it at toyotapartsales, they have the worst search engine that I’ve ever seen at a parts site in recent years. But their prices are soooo good.

Any chance that you could post part numbers for each of the parts you got?

Hey guys,

I found the ECT sensor, just go the the 1992 Camry replacement part search
and type "coolant", And it will bring you the part for $41.95

Anybody else replaced this part and saw "change" in fuel economy? Anybody
has a pic to show around where about this component is located? L8rs!!!!

after entering correct year and type car:

Step 1 open electrial
Step2 open powertrain control
Step 3 click on Coolant temp sensor current price is 41.22
The function is to relay to the computer the temp thaty the engine is running. As they get old they tend to cause the car the run rich on fuel.
Hopes this helps
Bear
