Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
i wanna take my alpine cda 9856 head unit from my 1988 plymouth sundance and put it into my 1995 toyota camry xle v6.
i dont wanna pay cartoys like 50-60 bucks to install it as i heard its pretty easy to do so. how would i do it? what do i need? i think i need adapter kits or whatever so the headunit actually fits inside the camry, what one do i buy?
any tips/walkthroughs/persoanl experiences..wouyld be really appreciated
Yes. it's very simple.
First go to the audio section and/or the camry FAQ thread, you'll find a thread about it. IF you can't seem to find it, search rayray here or google rayray (he used to be a member here).
Basically: 1. Get adapter from Bestbuy, cardomain, or wherever you like.
2.Pry open the plastic around the unit. Basically the part that holds the cig lighter.
3. You'll uncover the HU housing and 4 screws. Take the whole Double din out so you can work on it more easily.
4. Do the reverse.
And I don't know if you have the little pocket underneath the HU... you can probably pic it up here from a part out. The other issue is I wouldn't recomend a faceplate, it looks all right withought one.

oh wow had no idea there was an audio section here. sorry lol.
about your second part.. the little pocket underneath the hu? what do you mean? and why wouldnt you recomend a faceplate? i kind of need a head unit if i want to control my subwoofer, and etc. lol... (personally i think the car looks better without an aftermarket head unti as well though)
lol..sorry for being vague...I mean that black plastic you can buy that surrounds the HU. As for the pocket. There was 2 types (sizes) that came out... a single din and a din and half (from factory). If you have the single din stock stereo, there should be a small pocket under neath the HU. Later models added a little flap/door. Find that "How To" by Ray ray and you'll know what I mean.

yeah, thats what i meant by it not fitting in the car lol. do you think car toyswill have that for me? or some car audio store?
also what does the adapter do?
LOL..it's been a while since I upgraded my Gen3.5's stereo.. (was going to do a write up but never got to it)... The Adapter will give you two plugs that will connect to your car and the wires come out (with diagram) so you can easily hook up to an aftermarket stereo. (could be vice versa) Again, it's been a while since I've done any homework on such a simple project. Go read up and come back here if you have more questions..I'll be glad to help and I'm sure many other members would be willing to correct any falsities (spelling?) I may have.

so do i already have an adapter? car toys installed alllllll my stuff in my old car, so im guessing i have an adapter?
but pretty much to install this, all i need to do is pull the deck out, unplug wires, pull out the stock deck in my camry, unplug wires, plug aftermarket hu into wires, stick it in there, and its done? (unless i need a din thingie of course so it'd fit) i dont need any special tools really or any crimping or anything? lol
Sounds like it. Almost "plug and play"... go for it. Have some crimps and heat shrinks handy (just in case and for cleanliness). Worse that can happen is you'll be driving down to radio shack or the stereo shop for parts.

thanks! how do you suggest i take the stock radio out though? i dont want to break anything lol. i dont know whats connected to what and what needs to pop out.
doing this myself will save me some bucks, but i think im gonna have car toys install my amps/subs cause that seems a little more work.
Again, I refer you to rayray's write up..it's a how to with pics. And look at my first reply.

1. Take out the little tray for coins, then pull the Frame out. Be careful when pulling it out b/c it could break. Try pulling all around but start from the bottom then move ur way up to taking the whole thing out.
2. Unscrew the 4 bolts
3. unplug the old stuff and connect the wires w/ ur new wire harness.
