Passenger side rear door doesn't unlock w/ power locks

What would cause this, and what would the fix be? I can unlock it by manually unlocking it from the inside of course.

I'm replacing interior parts that are damaged or broken. Thanks!

I had this problem on my front passenger side door. It wouldn't unlock and only occasionally lock. What went bad is the little motor, inside of the power door lock unit. Toyota does not sell this separately. They only sell the whole unit as one piece. The motor is similar to that found in toy cars. Should only cost you a $1.00. Remove the door lock unit and open it up. Cut or heat up the solder points and remove the wires from the motor. You have to remove the gear from the broken motor and put it on the the new motor. Best way to do this is heat it up until the old glue melts and slide it off the shaft then superglue the gear or epoxy it so it won't spin freely onto the new motor. Be sure to lightly sand the shaft of the new motor the superglue/epoxy something to hold on. Resolder the wires to the new motor and replace everything.

Before you do this I suggest cleaning all the rails and plastic guides connected to the power door lock unit. You may just have some gunk on there.

Wow sounds like a lot. I wonder how much the entire replacement piece is? Thanks for the great advice!

The unit for my front door was around $400. I don't know what the back would be.
It's very tedious work. I actually took apart the driver side unit to compare the strength of the motors. There was a big difference. I have an extra car so I could take my time with it.

Right before you disconnect the motor put a voltmeter on and see if you get voltage when you actuate the switch. If you're getting voltage then it probably is the motor. If you're not getting voltage do a little more thorough investigation. It might not be the motor.
