3rd Generation Fixed! was: Help: got stuck during a timing belt change

Edit: Jeff 96 Camry was right! After you get all three bolts loose, it's just a wiggle and a twist to get everything out. My timing belt is done and I did the water pump too.

Bonus, I took photos, so I'll be making a "sticky" worthy post on the water pump change soon.

original question below:

Hi all, I got stuck during a timing belt change regarding that thing under the "dogbone" motor mount.



if you look at the red arrow, you will see it points to a bolt. I got this one loose, but it seems to hit the body. The bolt is too long to remove. There looks to be three bolts total, and as far as I can tell you need to remove this -- as well as the dogbone -- before you can remove the upper timing belt cover.

any ideas?

(oh, and is there anyway to scale a picture, or do I need to photoshop-shrink the photo first?)

That bolt was a pain in the ass to get in and out. I think I had to jack the engine up a little bit. good luck

loosen off all your engine mounts and jack the engine up using a block of wood between the jack and the engine so as not to damage the oil sump.

Thanks, I'll try it.

Funny how this isn't clearly covered in either Haynes or the Frigging Factory Manual. Neither even show the part as being removed as a separate step, making me wonder if I was doing it right. As you can see, I tried to remove the upper timing cover with this part in place.

No motor jacking needed

If I recall this bolt and the one next to it will not come out alone. In other words loosen them both and then pull the motor mount mount out with the bolts still in it's holes...does that make since?

motor jacking works, and I think you can undo all the bolts and get it to slide out with the bolts still in the bracket. been a year since I did mine, though.
