3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Decided to make a post to talk about this issue...
My 94' Camry recently got broken into, whoever did it forcedthe door handle out and opened the door, stole some stuff in my car, anyway, just wondering if you guys can help me find out how did he opened it exactly (like what he/she did through that little gap to open it), and if there's any way of making it less easier to force the door handle out, or at least have something inside to protect the lock release so it would be more difficult to open the door from the gap, here's a photo for you guys.
Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated, because I hate how easy it seems to get into my camry (well, I mean the way he/she did it, I know there's other ways to get it, but to think the door handle can be this easy to "crack" and open, what's the point of having the lock at all...)
The lucky thing is the door handle's damage is not serious, just need to get that handle back inside the door and it'll look perfect again, was told repair fee will be around $30~$40 CDN by an uncle of mine who does repairs at home.
Nobody care to answer or nobody knows about how the thief opened the door? or it's just that I have asked a question where people think I am just being silly...? :\
Well.. in any case, I am still hoping someone would be able to tell me or suggest something..
wish I could. Its not just toyota's. This same thing happened to my wifes Acura CL and stole our whole system. You could always do what Idid to my camry and shave the handles lol.

The more you reinforce the locks the more damage they are going to do to get to whatever they're after. Afterall, the cheapest key is a brick. Smash a window and then open the door from the inside. Just don't leave desirable stuff in view.

they probably shoce a flathead screwdriver in there and worked around it, they most have pratice this alot since it didnt make any damage to the rest of the door

that's exactly how i got into my ST162 Celica when i locked the keys in it.
truth is, if a thief wants to take something out of your car, he'll take it one way or another. best thing you can do is to try and park the vehicle in areas that are no blatantly dangerous or if at home, park in your garage (if you have one).
don't leave valuables inside the car, or at least don't leave them visible to outsiders, that will only tempt them.
if they didn't break the handle they probably would have broken a window, so you lose either way.
The same thing happened to my 94 coupe before I bought it. They pryed the passenger door handle and broke it, and then busted out the passenger side window too!
It was a joke, if there were no handles how could they pop out the handle.... But like someone else said it would have happened anyways they probably would have gotten the window broken out. Get an alarm and or garage the car.
