FUEL LEAK-Stuck on the road-HELP!

I am in the middle of a long trip to North Carolina for spring break and I noticed a fuel leak coming from either the return fuel line or the fuel supply line that exit the tank and dip down along the frame rail, just ahead of the left rear tire that I also just had to replace in an emergency. I noticed a steady drip that is there when the car is running. When I shut the car off, I relieve a little of the fuel pressure by taking the fuel cap off, this seems to stop the leak until I restart the car. I have just had major surgery and cannot climb under the car on the road to see which line is leaking...Can I continue to N.C. without the car dying? It seems to be running well now....I would really really appreciate some solid advice. I can get someone to help me fix the lines when I reach my detination, but I need to get there? Will she keep running with a leak, I have no choice at the moment?? Thanks!!!

I'd just be worried about it being a massive fire hazard, not so much the car breaking down.

It IS a common thing to rust out on a Northern car though. It's the entire Fuel Filler Neck that needs to be replaced. For a back yard mechanic, it;s not hard. Just like $150-$200 for the part I think.

But like I said, it's more a fire hazard then anything else at the moment.

do not drive the car while it's leaking fuel...if it hits the exhaust (which it most likely will, while moving), it will set your car on fire

I made it to NC without incident. I had to replace the return fuel line that connects to the top of the tank (fuel pump). I bought some high pressure fuel line and snaked it around and down the side of the tank. I removed the old rubber fuel line from the union under the car and connected the new line. I did not relieve the pressure from the system and changed connections quickly but lost some fuel. I now have no leaks. Living in a cold and snowy climate sucks because everything rusts out and leaks!!!!!

good to hear that you fixed the problem but more so that nothing happened on the drive down lol.

lucky that it wasn't a hard line either- soft lines are nice to deal with
