Question 1992 Camry engine diagnostic software

I have a 1992 Camry with 207K. The engine has intermittent rough running & stalling at idle, mostly after the engine is warmed up. It has had a complete tune up and the timing checked. The Garage thinks that it is either the O2 sensor, or the MAP sensor ($200.00). The problem is that they do not have software that goes back earlier than 1995 so they are having trouble diagnosing the problem. Is there a way to read the engine codes with out the software (key turns, brake taps, jumper wires, blinking lights etc.)? If not, is there an inexpensive way of obtaining this software? Is there some type of reader that I can purchase that would read these codes? Tired of planned obsolescence… Thanks.

Go under the hood to the diagnostic port and use a paper clip to jump the terminals T1 and TE1, then turn your key to on without starting the engine. If there is a code stored the CEL will blink. The code will be a two digit number. The CEL will blink the first number, pause, then the second number. If there is no code the CEL will blink constantly. A Haynes manual will list what all the codes are.

3rd Generation

Any shop that has been working on cars made before 1995 should know how to do the above mentioned procedure. If they say they need an expensive 'machine' to pull the codes I'd be vary weary of going there. OBD I has fewer abilities than OBD II but at least the common mechanic has the ability to get he basic codes in an easy way. Just a note for the future, if you have a newer than 1995 car/truck, you can just go to AutoZone or Advance and they can pull any check engine codes for you.

You can go over to the Toyota Camry forum on Automotiveforums.com. They still have the manuals there available for free downloading at the top of the forum. Download the generation 3 Camry service manual. It will have the procedure listed above for obtaining the codes and what the codes mean. If your computer is too slow to download the manual, then go to your local library and get a Haynes or Chilton's manual for your generation, or go to the local auto parts store and buy one of these manuals for about $15. They too will have the procedure in them.
