3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi everyone. I just want to ask you guys some advice regarding what to do with my 1999 Camry AT 2.2L. Unfortunately, I think its transmission blew coz I accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal while it is engaged on 'park.' The engine had a crunching sound and smoke came up from under the hood. I quickly killed the engine and when I popped the hood I saw oil splattered behind the radiator and 2 screws with pieces of metal on the road surface, not to mention a small puddle of oil. Upon careful inspection, I saw a small hole on the transmission housing in the part that it is bolted to the chassis - and I can see gears inside and oil.
Question is, can the car still be saved? How much will it cost me to have this up and running again? And where should I take this car if in case I decide to have it fixed (cheapest place)? I only have 83k miles on this car and its in good maintained condition, so I really feel bad dumping it. I would appreciate anyone's suggestion. Thanks!
It doesn't make sense what you are saying. If you press the accelerator while the transmission is in park, so what? That shouldn't do anything. Describe what you did more clearly. The description of the damage sounds pretty brutal, so I would suspect you would need a new transmission bell housing, or in essence a new transmission since no one is going to pull a trans without overhauling it.
It sounds like what you may have done is broke off one of the trans mounts from the trans bell housing by torquing the engine while your parking brake was on? If so, you must have sat there and rev'ed the engine several times at high RPM to do this.
I might be interested in purchasing your car or possibly selling you my used (but good) 99 Camry auto transmission. Please private message me if you would like to sell it. I also would like to see some pictures.
Thanks
I know it sounds weird, but I really did accidentally step on the gas while it was on 'PARK - I thought I stepped on the brake pedal. I believe that the engine will just rev if u hit the accel while its on 'NEUTRAL' (obviously) - does the same go when its on 'PARK?'. Reiterating what I said, after accidentally stepping on the gas, I heard a crunching sound on the tranny (please see my orig post for further details). Also, the whole engine moved backwards towards the cabin (see pic). I think it broke off from an attachment to the chassis behind the radiator. View the pix so you'd know what I mean.
Here are some pix of the damage:

yeah, it got ripped pretty bad. I dont know how accidentally pressing the gas just once (did not rev it) while gear is on park could do this. Any theories?
can't really tell from the pics....but mostly because I'm not that familiar with the 5sfe setup....but on the v6's, the front engine mount is bolted onto the engine, not the transmission....
and from the pictures, it looks to be the same thing...
it looks like you ripped a chunk out of your block, not the tranny. and that is definitely NOT fixable...there was probably a hairline fracture or some weakness in the structure before this happened, and then the rocking of the engine ripped the piece off
take it to a mechanic....or swap in a new engine yourself

Yeah, that's your engine, not your tranny. Sorry to say but it can't be fixed, you have to replace the engine. The tranny should still be good though. When I had to replace my 5S-FE (due to rod failure) I got a used engine for $900 shipped off ebay, and paid a local chop $970 to put it in, change timing belt, water pump, gaskets, etc. So you could get it done for roughly $1900. I recommend having a shop do it cause the 5S engine swap isn't too easy.

Yup, I agree now that its the engine block that got ripped off. The crankshaft pushed the connecting rod which broke the CR bearing off which in turn yanked the whole block from the mount. Yeah, maybe the cause is a factory defect in the engine... or the local Toyota dealership just doesn't pay attention to my car whenever I bring it to them for regular maintenance checks. Geez.
I'll try to see if I can find a 1999 camry 5SFE around my area... but what Im not sure about are the mechanics who would do the swap coz I dont know a lot of them except for the toyota dealership service center.
If ever I decide to bring it at Toyota, will they be willing to do an engine swap?
Will I have any problems with the DMV if I decide to replace my engine? Will my car have like a 'salvage title' or something?
