Can I put larger tire on stock rim??

Hello All

I have a 96 camry with the stock 14" rims and tires. The tires I have now are 195 70R14. I am wondering if a 215 70R14 will fit? I thought I had seen a size estimator here but can't seem to find it. If I've sdone my math correctly its only a ~3/4 inch width diference but I was hoping someone else has already done it or can point me to the chart.

Thanks in advance

Brian Kelley

to keep the speedo accurate you'll need to put 215/65 R14

my question is: why would you on stock rims?

Hi

Why you ask... Well this is the "beater" in our family. It really needs two tires and someone has got some freebies. The car only goes about 6 miles a day so the speedo being off isn't a prob. If the clearance will work I'll have them tossed on. Does the "70" mean they'll have a slightly larger diameter?
Hey Australia... It's already tomorrow for you isn't it?
Thanks!!

You have to remember that when you change the section width you also change the hight of the sidewall so the overall diameter will be larger. This will cause you to be going faster or slower than what your speedometer reads. If you use this calc it should show you the difference. http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCal...?action=submit

I would stick with the stock tire size because a weird sized tire like that is going to be a little more pricey and harder to find considering most newer vehicles are moving to larger diameter rims. Tires that are in uncommon sizes are more expensive.

Well again the only reason I was considering it was they were free but if they are going to be more hassle... It sounds like they might fit but there's only two so I would use them in the rear. THe calulator at the 1010tire stie is what I was hoping to find. I am also wondering why it says something about more than a 3% change may cause brake problems?

Thanks

BRian

For the 14 inch wheels, those tires will fit right on. There is a range of widths that each tire can be mounted. Most 14 inch tires spec sheets will show something like 5.5" to 7" (example) so go from there.

If you have ABS, then that may be an issue, as the ABS sensors do not agree (rear tires slower = skidding), the ABS Actuator will likely kick in and try and regulate the front wheels.

Ahhh ABS! Thats why the website had a caution flag. The last car I put two different size tires on was a 1969 Oldsmobile so I'm a litlle behind! It is starting to sound like a safety issue even though they may fit just fine. Hmm I'm quite sure I don't have ABS though...

indeed, it is nearly 4am Wednesday morning here. hi.

you can throw them in the back, that way your speedo won't be affected. as mentioned, if you have abs, it could become an issue.

i don't know how picky insurance companies are over there, but doing what you're suggesting would render the vehicle unroadworthy over here.

Well Good morning! I hope you don't have to be to work in four hours!
I think I've been convinced not to try it. If it were just me in the car well maybe but my toddlers and my wife ride in it too so I'll pass on the freebies. Thanks for all the info everyone!
As usual you guys rock!!
