3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Those anybody have a sport steering wheel? I've been looking at pictures and have seen none...
Is it possible? Is it Legal? Is it Possible to make a clip to interchange with the stock steering like in the French movie Taxi?...and still have cruise control on the stock steering?
I feel like a noob right now! But this seems to be one of the very few mysteries the Camry has in store for me!!!
The problem is the airbag is a dual stage, but my 96 Camry is a single stage. So, a bit of careful splicing will be needed. The cruise control is an easy splice. The wheel I have is for a 02 Corolla I think. I bought it so long ago I'm not sure now.
i was looking into this a while back, several makers have adapters (thougth most dont advertise the fitment due to legality concerns) even the venerable grant industries makes an adapter that will work, the down side is no air bag, and no cruise control, thats what stopped me, i have nerve damage in my lower legs and use the cruise control regularly, so the choices get cut to other yotas and lexus's or doing the custom and rewiring the cruise...
What I mean would be a clip to have the stock steering with c/c and airbag...then you just unclip, and put a steering without airbag and c/c...but you could be able to clip back the stock steering after and have the whole thing working thanks to a magical harness i'm still looking for...

dude u can do it, very easily, your description of a quick change with the stock wheel i dont think is feasible. hell i think i answered your question several posts back. nobody really does it because well you gotta search to find the right parts, you dot get to keep the cruise, and you loose your airbags (from what i understand both wont work if the one is unplugged)
if you want links to the available wheels look around, i posted this same topic about 3 months ago and had links in it...
but in case you cant find it
grant gt wheels has an adapter and tons of wheels
nrg innovations has some they say work
a few others slip my mind right now, but from what i understand anything from the older years should still work but dont quote me on it
nrg innovations does have quick releases, and wheels which will work with a number of wheel makers (if i remember rigfht) i just dont think you can have a quick harness set up forthe cruise and all, that why alot of the camry guys are using corolla, lexus, and other toyota wheels, they look better, feel better, and have a sportier design, but reyain the air bag and cruise
yeah....still haven't seen anybody with a celi wheel on their camy that was able to rewire the cruise since there is apparently a different number of wires- the airbag splices right up though
as for the dual-stage airbags....don't know anybody on here that has spliced one into the single stage srs system yet....I had one in my possession that I wanted to try, but then I sold it to use the money on something else...the question for those is...is it better to splice it so that the 1st stage goes off? or the 2nd stage? and will the single stage srs system accept the signals since it is a self-diagnostic system...
