Hi all!

I have a 1999 Camry which had an I4 2.2L 5s-fe motor until 157k when it suddenly developed a hole in block. The motor was replaced with what I believe is a year 2000+ JDM I4 2.0L 3s-fe. My mechanic told me it's a direct replacement for the 5s just less displacement, bla bla.

After doing some research I could not find any Camrys with a 2.0L. The only thing I found was this engine could have possibly come from a RAV4. So my question is where did this engine come from?

Well I'm pretty sure the Japanese Camrys had a 2.0 engine (among other options). That's where the "JDM" thing comes from Japanese Domestic Market. SO it likely came from a Japanese Camry.

Do the Japanese have a 2.0L 5s-fe or do they use the 3s-fe?

Also, been having issues with the check engine light. After I get it from the mechanic the light goes on. First he said it was the evap system, then it was an intake hose, or gas cap not being tight. Finally he traced the problem to an electrical short, but to no avail. CEL is on again. Any ideas what else this could be. I feel like the price keeps going up when the idea was to save money. Thanks.
