4th Generation Oxygen Sensor

Hi, my friends.

I had the engine service light on and I said it is the problem of oxygen sensor problem. But last week, I put off battery cable off and on. Now engine service light is off and has not come back since last Sunday. In your experience, the engine service light will come back on again? I need to do inspection in New Jersey. In this case, can I pass the inspection? I wonder if exhustation is still a problem or not.

Thanks in advance.

The trouble code that does not immediately return indicates that the sensor response is out of spec or the warm up time is too long. What year is it?, you car may still be operating at peak efficiency.

It depends on how many miles at various speeds that you have driven it since resetting the ECM. If it hasn't been driven enough to get an acceptable sample it will show up on the scan and they won't pass it. Once it has been driven enough (sorry, I don't know just how far. I would guess about 100 miles of city traffic and 100 miles of highway) it will pass the scan if there are no codes (no flashing lights).

I'm not sure what year model you have. In Texas an OBDI car has to pass a physical test. Only OBDII cars pass or fail based on the ECM codes.

HI,

If my 1999 camry is run at peak effiency, why engine service light was on a couple of months ago? I need to figure out the Oxygen sensor is still good or not otherwise I will not pass New Jersey State inspection and they are really strict.

Thanks.

4th Generation

Hi,

I did not reset ECM directly. What I did is take Positive battery cable off and put it back. The engine check light disappears. Since I do have the valid inspection, I only drive my 1999 camry LE inside the community. Rightnow, I only drove about 10 miles since engine light disappeared. I guess I need drive to test if the engine check light will come back or not. In NEw Jersey, state inspection is very tough. As long as service light is on, no pass is sure thing.

Thanks.

The computer monitors the sensor for trouble but only when a certain MPH, RPM and throttle position range is met over a certain number of trips. Thus it may be possible these conditions have not yet been met to trip the code again.

If you concerned about passing the test might clear the computer before the test. After the test if the code comes up again the sensor may need replacing.
