overdrive is your 4th gear, and the ECT button makes your tranny shift at higher rpms

IMO,
Overdrive off allows you to accelerate quicker at highway speeds
ECT on allows quicker acceleration from low speeds

ECT(PWR): delays shift till near or at redline allowing the crappy automatic tranny to actually use the RPM range(somthing i miss in my gen4).

overdrive: cruising gear, turn it off an u have a 3 speed and will eat gas and be no faster at ANY speed. for the gen3 owners, the only thing that should be used is teh PWR switch since it will hold the shift even going from 3rd to O/D.

you should use OD on to save gas
and OD off to drop into 3rd gear to pass people, or for engine braking
as long as youre not going too fast for 3rd gear

never use PWR mode unless you are racing, it just revs the engine higher and accelerates at the same speed unless the gas pedal is floored

lol, this means that you can drive "manually" in an auto Camry!

L = 1st
2 = 2nd
D = 3rd
OD = 4th

never use PWR mode unless you are racing, it just revs the engine higher and accelerates at the same speed unless the gas pedal is floored
that is 100% backwards. you never want to use over drive selection as a means to pass people or for engine braking. over drive is created as a simple cruise gear, put your fpott down and the car will shift out of O/D for you.

PWR was created for merging and passing by allowing conservitive the transmisson to take advantage of the power in the higher RPMs. its not for racing, just make the car a little, sportier, well call it. and it does not accelerate the same. turn it on and it will hold shifts longer, even at light throttle. the point in the rpm range where it shifts is dependent on throttle position. i suggest you read the owners manual because it explains what PWR is for.

Just keep overdrive on, you won't really need to turn it off ever. O/D off is basically used for slower speeds. I guess you can manually shift with the automatic, but you still don't have total control over the shifting. For instance, you could be at a dead stop with the shifter in 2nd, but the car will still start in 1st gear. It also won't shift immediately into 2nd from 1st gear with the shifter, unless you were to let off the gas a little bit when accelerating. L and 2 are used for engine braking (ie. going downhill for long distances, shift into one of those gears to help save the brakes).
