0401 EGR insufficient flow help!!

I have a 95 toyota camry v6 with the 0401 EGR code. Now from what I researched on the forums, it can be 3 different things...VSV, EGR valve, Vacuum Modulator

Is there a way to clean any of these parts to get rid of the CEL? I notice everytime I clear it with a scan tool, the code doesn't come back until 3 days later....so I am thinking one of these parts is just a little dirty...Does anyone have instructions to clean the vacuum modulator or EGR valve?

I just want to see if there are any solutions to fixing the problem before I go out and buy new parts...thanks in advanced!

Unbolt the EGR and clean it out with carb cleaner.

You will need to vacuum test the other two parts. Its pretty easy. Or, you could open up the EGR modulator and see if the seal is cracked. Its usually the EGR modulator.

It takes a certain number of miles under varying conditions before a CEL code comes up again. It may be taking you about three days for this to occur.

Like HooRAH suggested, pull the EGR & clean it (plenty of posts on how to). You may end up having to chip some of the carbon out with a small screw driver. Be careful not to damage the valve. Also check the vacuum hoses going to the modulator. Sometimes the lower one gets clogged up.

what would be the best way to clean the hoses? is brake cleaner too strong?

also is it possible to clean the modulator? or once it is out, it's out?

I cleaned out the EGR, tested the VSV and modulator and the light went away for a day or two.

It came back, i ignored it for a month or so, then I started using 89 octane.

Shortly after I started using the 89, the light went away.

My 2 cents

stephen88,

Sorry, I didn't see your question. I used a small phillips screwdriver to clean out my hose. The hose was about 2" long and I used the phillips like a drill bit. Twisted, removed, shook out the dust, did it again, etc...

I had the same problem. Egr was like new, i changed the modulator and nothing. Then i finally got a vsv and vouala. It fixed the problem, so if the egr is clean most likely its the vsv, not the hoses. My vsv wount even click when power was applied, it was dead. It was just a pia to change.

so the VSV is hard to change? I thought it was under the engine cover?

thats a result of using lower then standerd gas on the V6. toyota recommends 89 or higher on the 1mz.

Yes, but the car had been running on 87 for 10+ years with no code.
