3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am really new to toyotas, had explorer (cheap buy) but since I got my 01 camry 4 cyl I am in heaven, however gas prices are becoming ridicilous and I am about to change my air filter, I got K&N haven`t opened it yet though because I am not sure if it is a good idea or not. People are saying that the oil from the filter messes up the MAF and throttle body. So I do around 18 000 miles a year and filter for my camry is around 16 dollars so I am doing it more for convinience than MPG or even HP increase. So my question is: IS K&N worth it at all for 01 camry automatic? Right now I have 72456 miles on it. ANY HELP WOULD BE MORE THAN APPRECIATED IT.

Welcome to the Nation,
You are better off to use OEM filters. While K&N claims to allow more air flow, they never mention how well they clean the air. If they were that great, then every auto manufacturer would use then as OEM equipment.
Bear
this is true, they do allow more "stuff" to get past it but as long as you oil the filter properly, clean it properly then it shouldnt give to much trouble.
So my thing is yes because I can save money in the long run or no because it is gonna kill my engine? by that I mean in the long run the filter is gonna let the particles thru and some who lead to deposits ------what about sea foam as a solution? just storiming
Thanks, I have bought sea foam deep creep DP and I will clean my throttle body b4 I put in the K&N, not bc of K&N but bc I have never done, so I guess it is a good thing to do. BTW THANKS FOR ALL THE USEFUL HOW TO DO ON THIS WEBSITE, since the last thing I want to do is mess up m car, alot of things, pics helped me to clarify my questions. On the other hand my moms altima has K&N, and I am pretty sure she put more of the oil while she was recharging it. Now she gets the check engine.... would sea foam help it atleast a bit? it has 115K
I've had a K&N drop in filter on my Miata for the last 160K miles and haven't cleaned/recharged it yet. Everytime I pull it out it looks almost new, I just tap it dirt side down to knock off the lbugs and put it back in. I suppose I could clean it and re-oil it just because, but IMHO it doesn't really need it.

I thought it would too. Last year (at approx 158K miles) I did a compression/leakdown test at a club tech session (I was the tech director of the Arkansas Miata Club last year) and had all cylinders read within 10 pounds of new factory spec (190). I have no idea how the PO took care of the car since I bought it used at 5 years old and 27K miles. I now have 184K miles on it and use it as my DD and AX weapon. But as I posted above, I guess I could clean it and re-oil it just because. YMMV

well, it seems like no real damage so far- as shown by the compression tests, but unless you can see the walls of the chambers...there could still be damage
I didn't really start thinking about this too much until I started taking my supercharger apart and asking about it. The rotors are covered in teflon for a number of added performance reasons, but long story short, many people's rotors are chipping teflon....which is due to larger particles coming in through cone and aftermarket air filters
it's hard to say because most people who have superchargers also run aftermarket intakes....but after talking to the supercharger rebuilders, apparently people who run stock intakes with their superchargers don't have this problem

i use to use K&N filters, but i think they they offered zero performance and fuel economy increase. i have heard of the oil causing problems with some sensors, but only in cases where there is too much oil on the filter. personally at this point im back to using paper filters.
but for power- on the dyno, I tested with and without k&n filter back in the day with my stock airbox, and it put down the exact amount of power. so, long story short, you could say that running a k&n filter is the same as not running a filter at all (at least on the dyno), which is about the best performance you can hope for.
unfortunately, we didn't have a paper filter to compare with at the time
