??? for CF Trunk Owners

I just got my cf trunk lid(thanks Wraith) installed today, and it looks really good, but how do you adjust the tension on the hinge springs so the lid doesn't LAUNCH open?

hmm...I got a reply from the pm I sent to Miltdoggie, and he said I'll have to take the springs off. However, it'll be a problem to keep the trunk open without the springs. Maybe I'll try taking off one spring from one of the hinges. It'll be worth a shot I guess. If that doesn't work, I'll just have to disconnect the pull cable from the trunk release, so that I don't mess the whole thing up if I forget.

I believe one spring is too much tension as well... i removed them both and used a stick to prop my trunk when i had one. if it keeps flying up like that you will damage the carbon, so its best to just take them out.

Another idea is to see if you can find a softer replacement spring that'll fit from someplace like McMaster-Carr. They have a huge selection of springs in all shapes/types/rates.

Yeah thats an idea as well. I was really surprised the first time I took it apart because I thought it would be an actual set of springs, not some tangled mess of metal rods

Damon when did you become a supermod? Also, i was watching a show where they installed a CF trunk and they adjusted the stock spring by heating it up to soften it and it worked like a charm. That might work for you as well.

Well, I did some thinking, and was about to remove the springs. However, I noticed that there are 3 tension slots on both sides of the trunk. Looks like it is possible to adjust the spring tension, though to only 3 settings. I set the springs to the lowest slots, but they still had just a bit too much tension. It's not as much as before, but still too much. Looking at it, I came up with 2 ideas. The easiest would be to put in some mini bungie cords to counter some of the spring tension. I attached 5 or 6 mini bungies to a small hole that was already in the trunk hinge arms, and the other ends to a holes near the trunk pass through, and it worked. The mini bungies dampened the tension on the springs just enough to stop the trunk arms about an inch before hitting the rubber arm bumpers. So, I'm going to stick with this solution for now. My 2nd idea was to remove the springs, and mod a pair of hood/trunk supports struts from the hinge arms to the floor or somewhere near the pass through. I think it'll work, but I don't have the time to try it right now. Maybe someone else, who has the time, would like to try the second option.

When Toyota got the 3 gen camry's out of the factory they put the tension to the center slot...but they later had a recall on the camry with spoilers because the trunk didn't stay open. So you went to the dealer to have the rods put in the 3rd slot!

A way to have less tension without all those bungee cords would be to create a 4th set of holes to relieve the tension.

Great idea Willy! I might try that one this week. I might even add a 5th set, just in case.

its been a couple weeks, haha. But yeah, modding a damper like the ood setup would be pretty slick. I didnt use the trunk much, so i just had a broken hockey stick in there Passed down to me from Nate...
