4th Generation Excessive tire wear 00 Camry

I purchase this car with 44k miles as a certifed car, It had new tires when I got it but they only lasted about 25k miles and were wore out. They were General tires so I was not too worried about it. I then purchased BF Goodrich TA radials and was lucky to get 20k with them. I decided to go with NTB and purchased some Sigma regents that were supposed to be 80K mile tires, I bought their 2 yr allignment package and had them rotated every 5-6k miles. I was able to get about 25K with them before they were wore out, I noticed after about 10k miles the inner sides were wearing, looking to me like an allignment issue. NTB said the allignment was fine. I just purchase a set of Sumitomo tires and I have 117k on the car now. Does anyone have any idea why these tires wear out so quickly?

i had a similar problem recently with my 96. i went to get my tires rotated and balanced and they pointed out that 2 of my rims were bent- probably from pot holes. These were the original rims so i replaced them. the tire wear has been very normal since.

are certain tires wearing more than others?

Inside wear suggests negative camber, or toe-out conditions. I'd have another shop take a look at the alignment, and have them show you the readings and how close they are to specs.

I have 50k mile tires, and always spinning them (sometimes smoking them), and they're around 30k miles now I think, and still good. It's an Alignment issue as stated above.

Have they(shop) checked for loose suspension parts? Tie rods, ball joints, etc..
Can you post up your current alignment specs.

I was going to suggest worn suspension components also. I had a big issue with tire wear on the inner walls on my tires. I replaced my springs and struts and havent had any problems since.

It seems like the front inside of the tires wear the most, I did take it too Goodyear and had them do a four wheel alignment, it didn't do any good. I did have one tie rod replaced but the other components were okay. I had questioned the struts but was told it wouldn't wear the tires on the inside as mine were.

I will get a copy of my allignment and post it.

Thanks for the comments

Just FYI, when my struts were bad (original and 160k miles), my tires, particularly the fronts, were wearing more on the outside, coupled with minor cupping. After I changed my struts, I never did an alignment, but my tires are wearing very evenly at 12k miles since.

Yea, I was at 208,000 miles on my original suspension completely no parts had ever been replaced and I had serious wear on the inside of the tires. I threw on a set of Tein springs and Tokico struts, never got it aligned and my cheap tires i had on lasted longer than any other set ive had and wore very evenly. Give your struts the basic check push down on the corners of the car to see how long before it stops movement. Good luck hope you get it figured out.

Second the struts. Blown old wallowing struts have an effect on tire wear, it did on my old camry.

Worn struts will not affect inside tire wear. Although a bent one would. As well as sagging springs. Not to mention too much neg. camber.
You will get a choppy tire on worn struts but not inside wear.

A blown strut should be able to produce worn inner tire patterns. A blown strut coupled with worn springs is going to produce a lower height which in turn affects the camber negatively. Cupping and feathering which is what im assuming you were referring to when you mentiond "choppy" is usually from misalignment in the toe of the car which has nothing to do with struts or springs. Thats all tie rods.

Camryshow,
I'm not arguing just needed some explanation on how a blown strut would cause inner tire wear ?
I know a blown strut would not affect ride height.

...and yes. I meant cupping.

Yea, by itself it wont affect height but usually everyone is rolling on totally stock suspension on these cars so by the time they realize they have a problem with tire wear struts will need to be replaced too.

I wasnt tryin to argue with you either I just want to make sure this guy gets the problem taken care of all at once because it sucks to have to keep buying tires.
