3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
New to this but desperate for expertise. Have a 2000 4 cyl Camry - Japanese made w/ Cal emissions system. It has a crack in the flex pipe part of the catalytic converter. Can this be replaced by a non California converter? The Toyota parts guy tells me I need their $1,050 pipe or it won't pass inspection in New York State and that the check engine light will be on.
Anybody out there had any luck with aftermarket direct fit converters??
^^ LOL say fuck you to the dealer and bring it to a mom and pop exhaust shop- they can replace that flex pipe by itself for less than $100 including parts and labor. Good Luck.
Haha. Same deal I had, made this terrible sound. But the dealer was nice enough to tell me to go to a garage and just get it fixed there. Saved a ton of money. They just need to cut off the broken piece and weld on a new one, easy job.
i replaced the cat on my `1988 nissan pickup with a cut-and-bolt one from the internet for $55. Passed (California) smog which is one of the toughest in the country. the smog guy checking the car was totally anal about checking EVERY piece but he didnt care what kind of cat was on there (how would he know what OEM cat is supposed to look like anyway?) as long as the hot air out the tailpipe was clean enough.
i just bought an aftermarket new flex pipe with cat on egay for $150 a few months ago, and installed it myself, direct bolt on, works fine, CA emission, originally sold to NY state. i believe flex pipe with cat is same for CA and federal emission, the difference is on the A/F sensor, and an extra CAT before the the flex pipe for CA emission.
I have read where some shops offer to put in a solid pipe instead of the flex pipe. Avoid doing this. It may work short term but the flex pipe is necessary.

Don't know if anyone will read this now after all this time. Think I did another post to tell resolution of this. The dealer tried to cheat me. I found out that the car was still under the 80,000 / 8 yr warranty on emissions. They very reluctantly agreed (I'm thinking they were going to charge me for the part and then submit it under warranty.) THen they told me that my muffler was leaking and that it was a dangerous situation and that if a Toyota rep came in and saw that I left with a dangerous co leak that they would lose their franchise. It would only cost me $596 (or close to that) and since they had GIVEN me the cat pipe the least I could do was put on the muffler it desperately needed. Upshot is that I still have the same muffler and it still is not leaking. This is May 2, 2010. They are crooks pure and simple.
^^ what's it for anyways? why not a solid pipe instead of the weaved kind?
It assists with absorption of engine torquing back and forth. If you had a solid pipe instead of a flex the whole exhaust would move two and three inches every time you shifted and would destroy the rubber hangers under the car. Also it helps the absorb some the vibration in the exhaust itself and not translate that back to the engine. Flex is needed for any item that long.

don't be afraid to post the name and address of the dealer who tried cheating you on parts & labor. it will help other members to avoid similar trouble with them
no mercy for crooks.
