4th Generation 99 v6 with a dissapointing mileage.

So we picked up a 99 XLE V6 for the wife, the PO was my mom's friend, has 142k km on the odo, I actually helped to maintain the car, so I know the car is extremely well kept. At emission, the CO readout was actually 0.00 , except the fuel mileage has been very disappointing for this car.

for last two tanks of gas, we've been getting about 500km/58L or 20.25mpg. What's there to do to improve it?

tires are 32psi
5000km for oil change, always synthetic
stock as it can be.

thanks.

what kind of driving habits does your wife have? does she accelerate fast from a stop instead of smoothly?

also, highway/in-town or mixed driving? makes a huge difference

from my experience though, during the winter (with winter gas), or 1mz's get about 500km mixed
at times when I do all in-town and have a bit of fun, I can only get around 400km before the gas light comes on...but that's with a decent bit of fun - otherwise, around 450km

during the summer, the mileage gets better

20.25 MPG is nothing to scoff at for a V6. I'd bump up the psi to 35.

It must be cold weather or driving habits. My driving style is conservative, set the cruise at 70 usually. I get 22mpg city 27mpg hwy on a 99 V6 with almost 200,000 miles on it. Our gasoline is E10, which is slightly worse than straight gasoline. I run 32psi in the tires and 10W-30 Chevron conventional oil. Climate is very mild, however, with morning startup temps no lower than 45F.

^ that makes a big difference....the temperatures in toronto are much much colder....with morning startups (well, all day start ups) being well below freezing- often close to -30C with windchill if not colder

I think that's great mileage, if I don't do highway then I average around 17 mpg and I drive like a grandma...
