3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I tried searching but couldn't find any solid answers. Here are some general questions I have.
1. What is a good oil filter for under $10? A mechanic told me that Fram is worst oil filter, which is what I use, is he correct? I use Synthetic oil if it's any help.
2. What are some reputable Toyota OEM vendors online with good prices? For things such as OEM brake pads, rotors etc.
3. I bought my car used, and noticed that there are missing screws in the trunk that hold the plastic panels in place, for when you need to change rear light bulbs. It's those weird twist screws. Where can I get replacements?

1: I;ve heard from many peolple that Fram is crap. Since you use Synthetic oil how many miles do you go on it? If under 5k miles, just use an OEM Toyota filter. If over 5k miles, I'd say use a Mobil 1 extended life filter.
2 and 3: Contact CorCamrySE here on TN about parts. He works at a Toyota dealer in MD. I forgot which one though.

What engine do you have?
If I4 I like these:
Purolator PL14476, L14476, PL14477, or L14477
Napa 1394 or 1396
Wix filters..just add a 5 in front of the Napa part numbers.

Yes, I4. I have heard alot about the Purolator's. I see that Amazon and Advanced Auto Parts carries them. Which is better, the PureONE line or the Premium Plus?
Also, my car just hit 60k miles. Should I replace the oil pan drain plug?
Thanks!

I try to change my oil every 8000 - 8500 miles. However, I change the oil filter in between.

60k miles, Do a Timing belt and water pump change since it;ls the I4 engine. With it, also change the crank seals and tensioner.
as for the drain plug, just replace the washer on it, thats all. The plug should be fine.
Damn, are you serious?
I just did a 60k mile service done few weeks ago from a trusted mechanic. He said I didn't need to get timing belt replaced. Not sure about water pump, crank seals, tensioner.
I paid him $520 to get lots of things done tho like all the main coolants flushed out, new spark plugs, rotors, pads etc.

The PureOne filter is the better filter. The difference between the PL14476 and the PL14477 is that the latter is about 1/2 or 3/4 inch longer but the thread and gasket are the same. The part that the I4 is supposed to use is the PL14476, but the PL14477 fits just fine and you're going for extended intervals, so use the PL14477.

The Wix filters are nice;y made and I use them all the time now, I used to use FRAM filters or Canadian Tire (made by FRAM).
Fram (And Honeywell) filters do appear to have cheaper construction, but I personally have not had any failures of filter can or media (Yes I do open them to check). I think that the failures occur if you have excessively high pressure differences to collapse the filter, or burst the can.
Then there is the white Quaker state filter that is made by purolator (Green ones are by Honeywell) available here in Canada.
