Hi,
after a CEL code 71 I performed a bunch of tests, and I got to the conclusion that the most likely culprit is the vacuum switching valve (VSV). I took it off from behind the engine (what a pain) and I bought a new one. Then I remembered that I read on this forum, that somebody didn't put it back down behind the engine, but instead attached it to the intake manifold. So I did the same. It was just too tempting to put it together in 10 minutes instead of 2 hours, especially in case I'll have to take it apart again.
Today I drove about 50 miles in 25 (afternoon) + 25 (evening) distribution. The CEL didn't come back on, so that's a good sign.
However, arriving home, I opened the hood to check on the VSV and it was really hot. I couldn't touch its metal brace. I tried to reach down to its original place, and I think that is a much cooler place. I am wondering if the excessive heat might hurt the new VSV. What do you think?
Here is picture about the new VSV at the new place:
