3rd Generation question about VSV relocation

Hi,

after a CEL code 71 I performed a bunch of tests, and I got to the conclusion that the most likely culprit is the vacuum switching valve (VSV). I took it off from behind the engine (what a pain) and I bought a new one. Then I remembered that I read on this forum, that somebody didn't put it back down behind the engine, but instead attached it to the intake manifold. So I did the same. It was just too tempting to put it together in 10 minutes instead of 2 hours, especially in case I'll have to take it apart again.

Today I drove about 50 miles in 25 (afternoon) + 25 (evening) distribution. The CEL didn't come back on, so that's a good sign.
However, arriving home, I opened the hood to check on the VSV and it was really hot. I couldn't touch its metal brace. I tried to reach down to its original place, and I think that is a much cooler place. I am wondering if the excessive heat might hurt the new VSV. What do you think?

Here is picture about the new VSV at the new place:

Thanks,

It will work, but toyota put it in the place they did for a reason. It wasnt that bad it took me like 10 min. Just use universal joints and have soem patience.

Thanks! I guess I will leave it there for a couple of more days, and if the CEL doesn't come back, I'll put it back to its place. I also have a leak from the valve cover gasket that dispenses oil onto the VSV behind the engine (maybe that's why it went bad), so I will fix that in the same time.

Well, I have the feeling that things break down at a faster rate than I have time to fix them. She is 16 years old after all. Maybe I should consider a new car.

The CEL came back on after about two weeks or so. Now it comes back and disappears sometimes within a minute. It usually stays on for only a couple of seconds on the interstate. The code is 71 of course. Any ideas?
