Engine Breaches the Bonnet

It's out...

Special thanks to Kocho...very good advice and pictures about the drivers side axle..took 5 minutes to remove.

few notes...I used the haynes manual - it says to remove the electrical connections before the drive axles - which you should - but 4 connections (behind the intake manifold) are much easier to get out once the pass side axle is out.

I cut the exhaust pipe - the manifold bolts did not move. I'll weld it back together when it goes in.

Next is a new tranny...or slightly used trannie

With the flash bring so bright, the car being white, and my screen cutting off the part where it says Toyota, at first glance it looked like a CT9A Lancer Evo(7/8/9).

mmmmm...m3....

and just a tip for the next time about the wiring harness...it's ALOT easier to just unplug the harness at the ecu and pull it out that way instead of unplugging the wiring harness at each individual point on the engine

Thanks Eye8,

I was on the fence about the ecu - for some reason (shot me now) I stayed with the manual...it was a mistake. The wiring harness was the hardest part of the job..took 4 hours to label and remove 42 connections....not easy. Once the wires were off, the engine came out very easily.

Had a chance to take the M3 to roebling a few weeks ago with some friends - enjoy..

What's wrong with your engine (and transmission)?

Engine is fine - trannie has rather large chunks of steel floating around in the fluid.

Oddly, this is my 67 year-old mom's car...her last car lasted 300,000miles - 99k on this camry. She drives like a little old lady, because she is. Very surprised the gears are shredded.

Can't figure out what went wrong - thought the trannie was bullet-proof.

The dealer told her it was 2500bucks to replace, so I offered to do the work...wishing I had just bought her a new car...

^ then why don't you? after all...you can afford an M3 and all...

and yeah...4 hours vs. 5 min...that's a tough lesson. But we all learn somehow....I kinda did it the "easy" way when I pulled my engine to do my tranny swap- I just unhooked my a/c as well as my p/s.....I paid for that after I put everything back together and had to pay for my a/c refill as well as fix my p/s which kinda went wrong when I just put it back on....

She loves this car..she told me it would be her last new car for the rest of her life when we got it...she's stubborn.

eye8, you did remove the power steering pump? I left mine on...it cleared easily...does it need to be primed before startup to prevent damage? If you mind me asking, how did your ps get damaged?

thanks

yeah, I left mine on, but the thing about that is that (at least on the 1mz), there is very little room to work with. the problem was that when I put the line back on, the only way to get it to really stay properly was to hit it with an impact gun (I also used the impact to take it off). And in addition, on the gen3 92-94 v6's, the power steering system also runs the fans.

so long story short, when I put it all back together, the line was badly krinked. I didnt' realize this, and after dropping the engine back in, I couldn't do anything about it myself anyway. in the end, it took my car up on a lift, my mechanic under it with a large pry bar, and another guy prying it from the top to unkrink my lines because part of it was under my hard lines. but the worst part was that my power steering pump was leaking because by hitting it with an impact gun, I had loosened the part where the banjo bolt goes into...and there wasn't a good way to get to it, nor fix it once the engine was back in without a lift to get in under it...

I hope that made some sort of sense...lol. long story short, I had to pay my mechanic anyway in the end to fill my ac and also unkrink my ps lines and fix the leak

i'm bowing low to you, and your mom's stubborn disposition. wait, i'm bowing a little lower still as you're taking care of mom, respecting her wishes, and taking the time to fix her car yourself.

i've been told by someone dear that women appreciate this kinda thing, and consider kids that will actually get dirty under their cars a blessing. sure, writing a check is easy, but hell SHE could do that if she wanted

got it all buttoned up and proper ? cool, enjoy the ride man, nothing like a new tranny to smooth things out.

sorry that happened to you...and thanks for taking the time to explain what went wrong...That PS mainbolt does feel pretty soft - I'll put it back on gently...

thanks again
