Question Camry fuel filter x-reference?

With most all of the early Camry fuel filters looking physically identical (mount and fittings), can anyone explain why each filter is cataloged separately for each year of production?

And example would be, the fuel filter for a '89 Camry looks identical in appearance and mounting position to that of a '95. And that seems to apply for either 4 or 6 cyl!

Can it be that it's the inside guts that filters out more crap for one model than the next?
..or something to do with fuel pressure regulation?

Thanks for your comments.
