3rd Generation speedometer

i jus bought a 96 camry le with 98k for $5600, and im lovin it. nice quiet ride and roughly only 2k rpm at 60mph = great highway gas mileage.
one thing that I've noticed is the speedo seems kind of inaccurate. this is the 4th camry in our family, a 94 and 96 le which we no longer have and a 2000 xle, and i've noticed this in all of them also. whenever im on the road and my speedo says im doing 30 mph, people are always passin me. on the highways im doing 65-70 mph and im barely able to keep up with the other cars.

ps: i was driving by one of those stationary sunlight powered radar signs that tell ur speed and blinks if ur over the limit. my speedo says im doing 35 mph so i put it into cruise control to keep my speed constant and then the sign says i was doing 35 then drops down to 32 as i set the cruise control (speedo still read 35).

any thoughts?

Speedos in both my '95s are pretty accurate. Sounds to me like you're just driving too close to the speed limit

You might want to check and see what size tires you're running though. If you're running the "wrong" size tire, you're speedo could be out by a couple of %.

heck ive had 2 speeding tickets, not in this car though, so Ive become kind of cautious of my speed. perhaps ill follow my sisters strategy of jus following other cars at their speed. stick behind someone at their speed and keep the distance between u and them the same, if ur speeding and theres a cop on a laser, hes first to be seen. hahaha. that happened to me once before

I tend to believe the other drivers are speeding. However, if you want to check it usually there are mile markers on a nearby highway. Time yourself while you maintain 60 mph on the speedometer from mile marker 1 to mile marker 2. 60 seconds on the nose means that the speedometer is accurate at 60 mph. If you, or someone who will loan it to you, own(s) a GPS you can get a very accurate speed from one of those.
