It might be a bearing wearing out. The timing belt tensioner comes to mind. It might be a loose belt slipping. Your vacuum leak is a possibility (though a jet engine is louder than any vacuum leaks I can think of). Track that down if you can.
Of course, you might also consider not driving near the airport!
