3rd Generation SO many questions!! Exhaust, HIDs, audio...

Hello members...

Now I have been searching for some of this stuff throughout the forum, but I have come across a lot that is for gen 4 or greater! Before we get into the questions....I have a 92 Camry 2.2 4cyl LE

Here are the questions:

1. I would like to get a performance exhaust (muffer, tip) but I'm wondering what brands are generally good/best, and price points. I was quoted $280 today for muffler and tip with install. (Not sure of brand) Any suggestions ?? I am also wondering if the muffler will sound like garbage since I have a 4 cyl??

2. HID retrofit...what price point am I looking at? If I dont do the whole retrofit...would clear corners and new bulbs produce a similar affect?

3. I'm looking to get new speakers in the front and back....any recommendations on sizing for both? I have read that 6x9s are good for the back, but just wondering if anyone else has had good/bad experiences with any other sizes. (I currently have a Pioneer head unit, rockford P200 amp and 10" P2 sub in a vented box)

Your help AND comments are greatly appreciated....

PS - How can I upload pics directly to the post?

1. For a muffler, I've heard Borla and Magnaflow are the best, with Borla being a bit quieter than the Magnaflow and the Magnaflow resonating a bit more in the cabin. Albeit, this is from what I've heard, not actually experienced. Not sure on pricing though.

Here's a video of a Borla on a gen 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6saoY3xHqV4

2. As for a HID retrofit, some of the cheaper ones I've heard of people doing were done for $600-$700 (talk to white3ch0c0late who knows quite a bit on it).

Simply, you cannot get a similar effect to HID's from anything other than HID. Either do the retrofit or don't. If you stick a HID kit in headlights w/out projectors you will get glare. It is also recommended that if you do a retrofit that you get Depo clear headlights, as the fluted stock headlights will scatter light more (or clear the stock ones). Yeah, you can aim the headlights lower but you still won't get the true dispersion of a HID retrofit because you are lacking projectors.

The brightest bulbs you can get and put in with very little modification are the HIR bulbs, which only need to be slightly trimmed to fit the gen 3's 9005/9006 bulb sockets.

See:
Light Output for your 9006 bulbs! (HIR)
http://hirheadlights.com/
For trimming info:
http://shnu.us/HIR%20Trimming%20Stock.htm
Ebay: (only place I know to get them)

You can also do the Silverstar 9006 to 9005 conversion, but I've heard it just gives you a bit of whiter light.
Here:
More Light For Those With 9006 Headlights

3. Speakers, unfortunately I am not sure on. Something I plan to do in the near future.

Hope that helps

Had 2 Magnaflows and an Apexi on mine. The Magnaflows sound deep and fairly quiet, depending on which one you get. The Apexi is more aggressive and is much louder. Borla's sound nice too but are a little pricey IMO. Other options include HKS and Aeroturbine but I have no experience with those.

1) the magnaflow sounds good IMO but id get on youtube and search the sound clips there. lots of good ideas.

2) price depend on source and method. if you go with a 9006 HID kit and get a sheild to prevent soem of the glare then it will cost ya about 200 bucks, if ya go with a projector retro then that will be more money and more work. getting the clear headlights wont do much more then look better but light output is about teh same. but if you do plan on doing HIDs id recommend getting them.

3) i dont think you can fit anything BUT 6x9s in the back.

Thanks for the input on the muffler system and HIDs...
I am getting the muffler done today, cat back tip, but it is smaller than my current muffler..... apparently the smaller the more noise it will produce? Is that true? Apexi is a bit pricey indeed, dont have funds for that at the moment lol

I will try and get some pics up once it's done.

3) projector retro will probably run me about 5 bills for both I think....if I order them is it something i can do myself? or would it be better to take it to the shop?

You CAN do the retrofit yourself, but you have to know what you are doing and have lots of patience, and some money.

^^+1

Also, check out hidplanet.com (the university section) and do a LOT of reading here beforehand if you plan to do the retrofit yourself

Has anybody tried modifying the 9011 high beams and putting them into the camry's low beams. Would it be safe, or even possible? I mean you can modify the 9005s to fit into the 9006s, then why not the 9011s.

I believe, since the 9012 and 9011 bulbs are 55 and 65 watt respectively, technically speaking (in terms of wattage) it would be the same as modding the Silverstars high-beam into the low-beam. You would still have to trim it I would imagine. But the one page of info on HIR's I gave above says:

Quote:
the 9012 low beam bulbs were brighter than the aftermarket 9005 high beams!
So, I mean, in theory you probably could if you wanted to, in the same vein as modding the Silverstars, but I'm not sure anyone has tried it. Referring to the quote above, it sounds like you really wouldn't need to (to each his own ), but hey, if you really want to squeeze as much light out as you can get I suppose it'd be possible to give it try.

P.S. - I take no responsibility if you melt the harness like what happened to Bluefusion6851
(sorry about that Bluefusion btw )

How did he do that? I think I'll stick with the 9012, thanks for the response. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

By doing the 9006->9005 conversion...

Just an FYI to those that upgraded low beams to 9005

1) Magnaflow.

2) Do the retrofit, It'll be worth it.

3) 6.5" - 6.75" in front, 6x9's in the back, and a good 4ch amp to power them all.
