3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
synthetic is just fine, it is not going to leak anymore. the early synthetics did the leaky thing, and now they got a bad name , even though they're fine now.
if you sw, and you think the engine is getting tired, i would go up a notch in term of grade. e.g. if you've been using 10w30, go to 10w40
synthetics don't cause leaks. If they leak it was because the leak was already there, they last longer while still providing equal or greater wear protection, and in general out-perform dino oils. I switched my Scepter to synthetic at 150K miles and never had a single problem, the oil held up better in every way (and i drive HARD).
While 219K miles is pretty extreme, switching to synthetic won't hurt the car. i guess the real question is, is it worth the added cost for a car that is closer to the end of its life than the beginning?

Nowhere near the end of the life of that engine.....switch if you want the cost. It will work just fine. My LE in my sig has NEVER seen synthetic and still runs just great!

It's definately not worth it. If you've been using conventional oil the whole car life, then stick with it. Changing to something new may not be the best as if its already used to the old.
