where the hell is the leak?

i'm leaking coolant from somewhere i can't freakin' see!

the leak is coming somewhere on the housing i think, behind the water inlet connection pictured.

i just stripped the car down to change the water pump. and replaced the water inlet gasket and the pump housing o-ring. the only thing i can think of is that the o-ring didn't seal properly or the housing is damaged somehow (is that possible?)

does anyone have any guess as to where this freaking leak is coming from? i definitely know where it's NOT, but i can't see in that area without taking the timing belt etc... off again!

f***!

Your guess is as good as mine.
Probably rolled the o-ring seal.
Did you apply a little grease on the o-ring when you slid in the waterpump?

You can actually fix this w/out taking it all apart.
The hard pipes are held in by 2 12mm nuts along side of the head. Just take it off and slide the pipe out and replace the o-ring or gasket w/c ever is leaking.

if i had to guess the leak is neither of those places. both the o-ring and the gasket were replaced, and both areas are dry to the touch.

the leak appears to be coming from behind and above those pipes, the only thing i can think would be the o-ring from the housing to the block. this really sucks.

Are you actually seeing the leak? In my case, I'm smell it (radiator fluid when idle). I plan to take to the mechanic to have it check out.

i couldn't see it but i had an idea of where the leak was. i took the timing belt etc. off again sprayed soapy water on the heater return pipe. then i sprayed compressed air into the reservoir line and bubbles came out right in that spot so it looks like the o-ring isn't sealing properly.

Awesome to see that you found the problem!!! I probably have the same problem with my car. It wasn't too long ago the water pump failed so had to get it replaced. Looks like things weren't put back together well. It was really annoying smelling that stuff....

Would this be similar to your case? It's only visible during the initial start of the car. This makes sense considering once the engine heats up, all the fluid wind up evaporating...thus the reason for me smelling the d%$# thing at the stop lights.

looks like it could be similar. after all was said and done my original leak was caused by the freeze plug being corroded. i stripped that thing down 4 times trying to find the leak and the whole time it was a $3 part from autozone.

Yep, this is the same symptom for my case. Appears to be behind for me since I do feel it wet there.

And where / what is this "freeze plug"? For someone like me who are NOT so mechanically inclined.

Man this site ROCKS!!!!

there are 4 i believe on the front side of the block. the one that was leaking for me is located on the block directly behind the water pump housing. that is what those metal lines are hooking into.

bad news is you can't get to it without pulling off the crank pulley, water pump, etc... my radiator fluid was very rust colored so there was a very distinct trail out of the plug where the coolant was leaking out.

Thanks a million for the quick reply! I have to say, this is one of those problem which is truly a pain in the a$$....labor intensive (you sure went throug a lot) and for someone like me...pocket deepening time. So heads up for you other camry owners on this one. Surely itimebomb and I aren't the only one with this problem.

I'm having the same problem with my '97 5SFE. There is quite a large amount of what appears to be dried-up coolant around and below the oil filter, and a couple days ago I saw WET coolant coming from just below one of those circular things on the block (the freeze plug?). Right now the coolant reservoir becomes empty after about 5-7 days of filling it and the radiator up. After only 3 days since I last filled it up the reservoir the coolant does have an added rust color (normally it is translucent neon green/yellow, now it is more of a darker yellow).
