I got a few questions and need some help :)

Hey guys, I've got a 1992 toyota camry sedan le with the 3.0L v-6. Right now, everything is pretty much bone stock, and I'm looking to change that up quite a bit. I'm only 17, but don't be fooled, I have a LOT of mechanic experience, and can do pretty much anything with a half-way decent explanation. Right now, I just need to know what I have for options for performance upgrades for this car, because it has a lot of balls now, but I want more power. So far I've found NOTHING by means of louder mufflers, beside basic oem replacements, there's no cold air intake options because of the mass air flow sensor, I've yet to find anything turbo- or supercharger-wise for it, and I'm getting frustrated. Obviously, a 17 year old needs CHEAP performance upgrades, and every little bit helps. I've already cut a large hole in my air filter box, for more air intake for the slightest little hp and noise increase, and plan on moving up to a mass air flow sensor adaptor with 3" tapered cone air filter from Spectre Filters, but if there's a better option, please, let me know. I also would like to make this car louder; deeper and throatier. What could I do to make it louder? Do they offer upgraded mufflers with a deeper tone and larger output exhaust tips, and I just haven't found them yet? Is there any other options I have for air intake, if it needs to be custom, I can do it, just tell me how... Also, I'm going to be doing a complete brake job this weekend; Pads, calipers, brake lines, the works, but I haven't taken off the rear wheels to check; do the 92's have pads on the back, or are the drums/shoes in the rear? I need to know before I head to Advance Auto, and don't want to hassle with taking off the rear wheels for no good reason. Also, do we have superchargers or turbos for these things yet?? I NEED more SPEED. I'm a kid. I race. Luckily, I go to a broke-ass school in a broke-ass town, so most of my competition is just other average cars and trucks, with the occasional suped-up jetta, civic, or mustang. I like to win So please guys, any and ALL help will be greatly appreciated on this long, dirty road to beefing this little sedan up. Thanks again, Derek.

a little more noise

E bay man that's all i can say, i've found many different styles of intakes (for cheap), and as for mufflers most are universal, u should be able to find almost any can u want and make it work. U just might have to make step ups from the stock piping to accomadate the larger diameter piping on the the muffler.

ok first ya need to check out the camry FAQs

next look into these cheap/free mods.
http://www.toyotatuners.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158

there are no turbos or S/Cs for the gen3 camry. but people have talked about puttign the gen4 S/C on the 3vz engine(what u have). but most agree the 3vz is a good motor for boost along the lines of a turbo.

CAI will have to be custom built, which is easy. muffler, just get somthing ya like. there are plenty of clips on youtube of differnt exhausts on the camry. also if ya want the best bang for buck performance wise, ull want to modify the Y-pipe. id also do some suspension work, thats a better way to spend money on a camry.

unles you go FI ur not gonna get much power out of the car, im thinkin 25hp at the most with a full exhaust the free mods and a GOOD tune. ud be smarter to swap in a 5 speed.

oh...welcome to TN

brakes

As for brakes, my '94 4cyl has rear drums, but i'm pretty sure that the v6 models have discs in the back, not 100% on that tho.

Fuel mods, fuel mods, fuel mods.... swap in larger injectors and a larger fuel pump (the 315 cc injectors from the MKIII supra are a direct fit.) Advancing your timing will help out with HP, the ACIS mod (*search for the DIY here) taking all the sound deadening out of the trunk, remove spare tire, etc. all contribute to more horsepower and a faster camry without breaking the bank.

3rd Generation

Thanks guys so much for the help;

94CamCoupe-Unfortunately, the exhaust I have right now has a side inlet on it, and its wicked hard to find a new can with side inlet, and if i put an elbow on it, it will offset the can too much to fit right and have the mounts for the muffler to line up. Pipe fitting isn't so much the problem on it. Also, I got down and checked, and my rear brakes are disc so I'm all set with that one, thanks.

BigBird- That link of tutorials was amazing. First thing in the AM I'll be doing some new mods. Also, by "boost" for my 3vz-fe, you mean something along the lines of a Nitrous Setup or kit of some sort? I would but $799 is a little pricey for me, lol. Also you mentioned modifying the Y-pipe? How so? I have a new exhaust; not upgraded or different, just a new, stock exhaust, so I'm still working with the same exhaust, But that damn side inlet muffler is killing me, because I want to put a larger can, like a 3" outlet can on it, although the chrome slant dual tips are nice for right now, but I prefer the deeper tone. And also, how would I go about getting FI? And I'd rather stick with my auto; I just dropper and brand spankin new fresh out of the box tranny in there, that cost me 900 out of my pocket, becuase the original blew on me finally.

Bluefusion6851- What do you think it would cost me for larger injectors and pump? Parts for the supras were pricey, is the matching 315cc gonna be pricey as well? Timing, I don't know so much about, so I don't wanna tamper unless I find some super-clear tutorials to walk me through it all. And with my luck, I'll take out my spare, and blow a tire on the first trip out, so I'll leave that alone, lol.

But again guys, thanks a ton for the help. I'm gonna go search the tutorials and see what I come up with, too. Hopefully, I'll be able to whip up a nice little sleeper to blow the civics and junk off the track. Right now I run a 0-60 in 7.8... My goal is 6.something. >

If you're starting out, I'd work on the suspension first. I don't know what your budget is, but you can get springs and struts for a basic suspension upgrade. If you have more money to spend, you can consider getting a strut bar, sway bar, and maybe coilovers.

If you want it louder and throatier, get an intake and a muffler. They won't do much in terms of performance but it will sound nice depending on what you get.
