4th Generation Questions...

So I have a few questions...first of all i have a 2000 Camry 4 cylinder, automatic.

I looking to do some small, easy to install performance mods. mostly an intake and exhaust.

For the intake, what exactly is the difference between a cold air intake and a short ram intake? Advantages/disadvantages? Good brands?

As for the exhaust. what would be not too expensive, but would make a nice deep sound and provide a good amount of performance benefit? Also, how difficult of an install am i looking at?

I know this is a lot to ask, but hopefully someone can help me out. Thanks

the difference between a cold air and and a short ram is that a cold air will be longer and pull air from outside the engine compartment, usaully from the fender. The ram will be short and suck air from inside the engine bay. both sound good in my opinion and function is also better. As for the exhaust you'll need to get headers and and larger piping if you want it to growl. both are easy to do. Just takes time. but notice a faster rev as your car will be able to breath like it should.

Also, does anybody know of any rims that wouldnt be too expensive that would fit stock size tires?

oh really? I've actually never seen a stock 5sfe before. Sorry to all you 5sfe GUYz. I'm just used to my car. usually when you do those kind of thing it let the rpms wrap alot quicker.

lol i know.. i actually have an exhaust system and i just threw in a k&n drop in filter into my stock box.. i mean- its already a CAI (if you follow it- its inside the front left fender) and how much more can it really whip out? Mainly- people do it for the sound cuz it just sounds so damn nice! LOL

minimal = u'll feel it but its not enough to satisfy.

I've got an Injen SRI with cat-back exhaust to Magnaflow muffler. Very minimal gains if any. Do it for the aggressive sound, not for performance. For wheels, I got my 17" Konigs for $150 with tires. Search around and you should be able to find a good deal.

A cold air intake uses longer tubing which enables the air filter to be placed in more efficient locations that draw in more outside air. Also the filter material is either foam or cotton gauze which allows more air in than stock paper filters.

A short ram intake uses shortened tubing so the air is able to travel to the engine much faster. However due to the short tubing the air filter will be next to the engine, thus not getting as much air as a cai and the air that it does get will be hot. The filter is made of either foam or cotton gauze so more air is able to enter.

A cold air intake is the way to go if you want the most power. It should give you around 5hp. The amount of hp it gives you is based upon the amount of air the filter gets and its temperature. Its easy to customize your intake by putting in air ducts throughout your engine bay to channel the air directly to your air filter.

As for exhaust the only thing that will give you sufficient hp gains is a header and catalytic converter or the removal of it. A muffler doesn't really give you anything and a catback only gives you 1-3hp.

For wheels I believe most stock camrys use 15" or 14" wheel sizes. There is nothing wrong with getting 15" wheels. You will be able to have thicker tires with a lot more rubber. However is you upgrade to larger diameter rotors or bigger calipers you will probably have to increase your wheel size as well.

You should get some performance spark plugs and spark plug wires in the meantime. NGK makes both for the 5sfe.

I say that I wanna stay at stock size because i just got new tires and they are pretty good. To get bigger wheels would make the purchase of said tires pointless and a waste of money

Thanks. The injen with the cat-back and the magnaflow sound like a good set up. Can you give me any specs...brands, part numbers, etc?

Only problem is, Injen doesnt make anything for the 5sfe...according to their website

I think Injen took the intake off the site. The one I have is made specifically for the gen4.5 5SFE and it was on the site a few weeks ago when I was looking for a CARB sticker and EO number. I'll have to look on the box to see what model number mine is.

As for the muffler, I was happy with my 2 Magnaflows and Apexi. The Magnaflow XL was way too quiet, so I'd suggest getting a straight-through oval design if you want something a little bit louder. The Apexi was louder and more aggressive and I believe that's what got me pulled over and cited. Either that or because it was chrome and is considered a "fart can."
