1996 2.2 Engine Swap 2 Different Motors in 96?

I searched 114 of the almost 400 pages of threads before registering and posting. I learned a lot of neat stuff but I Have a 96 Camry with a bad motor and block. I found a used 96 motor cheap but it has a different crank sensor or something to do with the oil pump. I am understanding that mid way through 1996 toyota change the crank sensor / oil pump set up and have been told that yes the two different motors can be swapped and just buy the right oil pump. The Machine shop told me that they are NOT interchangable? Any input? Thanks in advance.

hmmm.....they may be referring to the fact that part way through 1996 they switched to the same 5sfe block as the gen4 camrys, whereas the earlier ones were still the same block as the 92+.

if you're going to be swapping engines, just get the same one that you had before. don't deal with things like the crank sensor etc. it's as useless as the people who swap in a 3sfe because the engine is 100bucks cheaper, but has less power and then they have to deal with the crank sensor as well

Yeah that what it is, in June of 96 they switched to a different block but still the s5fe engine. Thanks for your help....it led me to do some digging and bought a junk motor with a good block out of a 99 and other than the head everything else is the same. Once again thanks.
