3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Im needing help with diagnosing a transmission problem. It only slips RIGHT when you start the car from being cold and try to drive it right away. Doesnt matter whether Drive or Reverse (havent tried L or 2). But, if I let it sit running for like 15-20 seconds before trying to drive off, its fine. Shifts smoothly into all 4 forward gears.
Now I know you're supposed to let the car warm up first blah blah blah....but I dont do this all the time, only when in a VERY big hurry. I usually let the car run for a couple minutes from cold start before driving off. But this isnt right. It shouldnt slip like this.
So...what can cause this? Im talking about the 93 XLE V6 btw...the one I just got.
Thanks guys!

I just got the car less than 2 weeks ago. I havent done anything to it yet. The previous owner had it rebuilt at around 180,xxx miles and it has 227,xxx on it now. His log book he gave me of maintenance doesnt show any ATF replacement since then. Maybe I just need to drain, replace filter/gasket, and refill it a few times?

Id check the fluid level. As for draining the pan, putting a filter on, and refilling, Id ask one of the techs here. Ive heard bad things about drain and refills on clogged up trannies.
I have another question...if the transmission is slipping and you keep pressing on the gas, would the rpm's keep going up and you just wouldnt go any faster, or would it stay about the same rpm? Cuz I did it once by mistake, but I dont think the rpm's went up.
Thanks!

You know whats odd, My car did this this morning, after I adjusted the TV cable. I let it sit for an hr or so, cranked it up, started to back out in reverse, and the car didn't want to move much. After about 20 sec of moving, it started acting right.
So, after a quick trip to the store, I adjusted the TV cable tighter, and wahlah, nothing like it was doing yet.
My point, assuming I dont have this anymore, adjust the TV cable 1 thread tighter.
Ill keep you informed because Imah drive it tomorrow morning to town.
btw, i drained the fluid twice 2 weeks ago(1st drain/refill, 2nd, seafoamed, drain/refill).
Remember, only time it did this was after a adjusted the TV cable looser(too much obviously).
However, my tranny shifts from 1st - 2nd a little firmer than I like. The rest are fine. Ugh, electronics are a pain to figure out.
Might break out the Ohm meter tomorrow and whip out the toyota manual pdf... (sorry, like to ramble when Im tired)
I had the same problem on my 2000 i4. On a cold day when I started it up and began to drive off, the tranny slipped. Once it was warmed up, it drove normally and everything seemed fine after that.
Update: My transmission shifts smooth again. The only things I did was:
-Replaced 3 vacuum hoses,
These 2:
Going to This Box:
And replaced this Hose as well:
-Adjusted the TPS with a filler gauge and Ohm meter by the toyota manual pdf.
Now it shifts smooth just like it came from the factory.
Not sure which one of these things did the trick because the TPS was pretty much on the money anyways when i checked it's previous position.
So possibly one of these vacuum hoses had a leak causing havok on the tranny for some reason.
If anyone has a clue why this worked, let me know.

yeah.. it suck especially if its a manual.. you'll be smelling the clutch after you get out.. hahaha
