3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Okay, I'm clueless as to what they are called (hood shocks, hood cylinder and pistons) what are the things called that hold open the hood on the gen 3 Camry's?
Mine will hold the hood occasionally and usually result in the hood hitting me in the head. I use a pvc pipe to hold the hood open now, but I was curious as to what the things are called and are they expensive? Is it common for them to eventually lose the ability to hold open the hood?
My 94 Camry still has the original hood struts. They hold fine, unless the temperature is really cold and there is some snow and ice on the hood to add extra weight to it.
You can purchase the hood struts at most auto parts stores for $20-$25 per side, so I wouldn't bother with e-bay. I have even seen Pep Boys have a buy one get one free sale, so you might want to check there.
As an added safety measure until you get new ones, keep a set of vice grips in the car. When you open the hood, clamp the vice grips on the smaller rod just below where it goes in to the bigger rod on the hood strut. A set of vice grips is smaller and easier to keep track of than a long rod and is a lot safer, if clamped down properly. It won't blow down from the wind and allow the hood to hit you in the head. That can be very bad for the hood.
my hood struts are gone but still got my antenna.. but i dont use it often.. and my drive side door handle is still original.. (knock on wood)

Everything on my car is original (except the usual maintenance items). My power antenna died, but fortunately in the up position. I will be buying a stereo for it, but nothing elaborate, just something so I can throw in a CD.
As for the struts, e-bay is about $25 for 2, plus shipping.
