3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
After reading through literally dozens of threads over the past few weeks on strut changes, I just need to clarify a few thing before I pull the trigger on struts/mounts & boots for my wife's (soon to be my daughter's) 99 4 cyl auto Camry.
This will be my daughter's first car (will be 17 in Oct) and I am getting it ready for her to be able to drive it for at least a few years. It has the original OE struts/mounts and boots with 178,656 miles on them. I decided on KYB GR-2 struts all around since I won't be lowering the car (re-using OE springs). Here are my questions:
1. Are the new Toyota mounts better or worse than new KYB's?
2. If I go with the new KYB mounts, do they come with new bumpstops and boots?
3. IIRC the new KYB mounts come with new bearings. Is this correct?
4. IIRC the Toyota mounts DO NOT come with new bearings, bumpstops or boots. Is this correct?
5. Do the new KYB or Toyota struts come with new springseat insulators?
6. Have I forgotten any other items?
7. I have done an eBay and Google search on pricing but would appreciate if anyone knows where I can get them for less?
Thanks a ton for the help!

1. KYB is like or better than factory replacement.
2. If your strut boots are still good (which I doubt) you will need to get those extra. It is not included.
3. I believe your Camry has a bearing so, if the spring seat and bearings are worn out, you will need these also. Again you have to buy these separate.
4. They do NOT come with it.
5. They do NOT come with it.
6. When you replace all the struts you might need to consider new end links because the end links need to be removed when replacing the struts, so it would be a good time to replace also with the high mileage on your car, yor end links are more likely dead.
7. Check out this website http://www.importrp.com make sure to simplify the of choice of vehicle to get the proper price.
Just replaced the stock mounts in a Gen 3 with KYB.
Can’t say for new Toyota mounts but the old mounts had better workmanship then KYB. These mounts only came with the bearing, nothing more. Don’t know if Toyota mounts come with the bearing, suggest talking to their parts department where you will order the part.
Not sure of the other questions, others will no doubt post.
For Toyota OEM parts various TN members have suggested the websites below.
For none OEM parts one site have used with very good result is www.rockauto.com. Watch on shipping as they drop ship from numerous locations, as such shipping costs can add up.
Some sites offer free shipping over $50.
If you have not done shocks before you will need a spring compressor.
I just got my whole suspension for my 98 camry at coolparts.com, there is a coupon on the sellers forum for a discount..
Now I'm short on time, but I'll come back to this thread latter or tomorrow and give you all the info that you need but you have most of the info that you need on the answers above..

KYB High Mounts??? Are they the same as Strut Mounts???
KYB High Mounts??? Are they the same as Strut Mounts???
Yea, I was in a hurry and I wrote that, sorry... Struts mounts, I don't know about the quality but the finish on the item it's very bad and it makes it look like it's a refurbished part, the metal it's very uneven and they painted it with a spray can of black paint, I called KYB and talked to customer service about this and the guy told me that he was going to look into it, but I don't believe he will. Everything else it's fine, the struts are made in japan, the lowwer spring insulators good, the rear strut mounts good, the boot kit are made out of plastic the they come with the stop.
Here are the parts for the 98 camry just in case you need them:

1. Toyota mounts are WAY better than KYBs in terms of quality, you get what you pay for. KYB mounts are good enough though.
2. No, you only get the mounts, bumpstop and boots must be purchased separately as with the Toyota ones.
3. Yes, you get new bearings with the KYB front mounts, the quality of those are worse than Toyota bearings also, but will still do.
4. Toyota mounts don't come with the bearings. No boot or bumpstop also like the KYBs.
5. Both don't come with the spring seat insulators. However, the Toyota boots have the upper spring insulator built on, KYB boots dont, its just a boot you slide over the piston.
Thanks again everyone. Based on a few more hours of reading from hundreds of posts, I have decided to go back with OE Toyota Mounts. I will however still be ordering the KYB GR-2's though. When I receive everything, I will post the individual part #s for the OE Toyota mounts, bump stops, bearings, boots...etc so others looking for the information will have it here in one thread. If anyone already has the part #s, please feel free to post them.

Just got an email quote from Toyota of Dallas on the factory Toyota mounts, bearings, boots, bump stops & lower spring perch insolators, $396.92 + shipping.
Here are the part #s and pricing break down minus shipping (it will be higher or lower depending on your location).
48750-33020 Support A $87.08 X 1 (Mount RR)
48760-33020 Support A $87.08 X 1 (Mount LR)
48603-33021 Bumper S $55.63 X 1 (Mount RF)
48609-33121 Bumper S $55.63 X 1 (Mount LF)
90080-38148 Collar $4.81 X 2 (Bearing)
48341-32053 Bumper, R $8.08 X 2 (Bumpstop R)
48331-06011 Bumper, F $7.78 X 2 (Bumpstop F)
48258-0E010 Insulator $8.35 X 2 (Insulator, Spring Perch R)
48158-33020 Insulator $12.68 X 2 (Insulator, Spring Perch F)
48157-07010 Insulator $14.05 X 2 (Dust Boot, F)
Admittedly, I wasn't expecting the cost to be this high for some routine wear items on a high volume car. I put Koni Sport Adjustable shocks on my Miata for $750 installed which including new bumpstops, boots, shipping and custom 4 wheel alignment. This Camry is going to run $1100 installed including ALL of the above parts with alignment and these struts arent even remotely comparable to the Koni shocks!

Reason: Pricing update
That's about right on the parts. I just did the suspension on my '95 and the total for all the strut mounts, boots, bump stops, etc. from Toyota was $462 with tax. I didn't pay shipping cause I got them locally.
I bought Tokico struts for $327 on eBay and H&R Sport springs for $247 from Tire Rack. I also did the TRD RSB at the same time with new endlinks and Gen4 bushing brackets which added another $305 in parts.
You're reusing your old springs, so no cost there.
My parts cost just with struts and associated replacement parts would have been $789
Add in the H&Rs and my parts total goes to $1036.
Add in the RSB and my total suspension parts bill was $1341. It adds up fast.

Thats sounds about right, my 92 is maybe 200-300 less, since I got a better price on a RSB, strut mounts/boots, and end links.
But I am sure your car runs really smooth after that maintenance.
My car is going under the wrench late this week. So I should have a better than factory ride when it is all said and done!
KYB'S ARE GOOD BUT TOYOTA KNEW WHAT THEY WARE DOING WHEN THEY BUILD THE OEM MOUNTS
2. If I go with the new KYB mounts, do they come with new bumpstops and boots? DUST BOOTS, DO NOT COME WITH IT SOLD SEPERATLY
3. IIRC the new KYB mounts come with new bearings. Is this correct?
IF THE BEARING DONT MAKE NOISE WHEN TURNING OR GOING OVER BUMPS THEY ARE OK NO NEED TO REPLACE THEY DO NOT COME WITH A KIT TOYOTA WOULD MOST LIKELY BE THE ONLY PLACE YOU FIND THEM THEY RUN FOR ABOUT 80 BUCK
4. IIRC the Toyota mounts DO NOT come with new bearings, bumpstops or boots. Is this correct? STRUTS, SPRINGS, BUMP STOPS, BOOTS, BEARINGS, NO SUCH A THING AS A KIT ALL SOLD ON THEIR OWN
5. Do the new KYB or Toyota struts come with new springseat insulators?
ONCE AGAIN SOLD SEPERATLY IF YOU NEED TO INSULATE THE SPRING TO PREVENT SQUEEK NOISES AND CANT FIND NEW ONES USE THE OLD ONES AND PUT SHRINK TUBE AROUND THE LOWER AND UPPER COIL I JUST GAVE YOU MY TRICK IT WORKS I USE IT IN THE SHOP ALL THE TIME
6. Have I forgotten any other items?
YOUR ON THE RIGHT TRACK TAKE MY WORD IF YOU CAN AFFORT IT BUY OEM YOU WILL NOT REGREAT IT I USE AFTERMARKET PARTS WHEN I LOWER THE CARS OR OEM PARTS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE
7. I have done an eBay and Google search on pricing but would appreciate if anyone knows where I can get them for less?
