3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
It's a 200i MANUAL '96 Gen3 Camry. I seem to have a rattling sound emitting from somewhere around the middle/front underneath the car. When the windows are closed I don't hear it, though if I drive with my window open it's quite loud. (It can be heard perfectly when driving past another car, or a sidewalk)
I had the car on ramps and noticed that the cover plates under the engine were a bit "loose" so I replaced the nuts and bolts. Both underneath the car, as well as where the front spoiler meets the plates. It improved somewhat, though a different "symptom" has arose:
When the car is out of gear (neutral) I don't hear the rattle, no matter how high the revs are. (Though I didn't go above 4000rpm) When the car is IN gear though, I can hear the rattling sound from around 2000rpm. I know that the clutch needs replacing. Can this be the cause of the noise? The sound seems somewhat like metal rattling against metal, yet I can't seem to isolate the problem. I checked the exhaust mounts and rubbers and they are perfect, so I doubt it could be the exhaust touching a metal plate above it.
There is no vibration in the car relating to engine speed. The only vibration is between 140 and 150 km/h due to wheel alignment / balancing.
Here is my list of possible suspects:
Clutch? (It needs replacing, so perhaps it could have something to do with it?)
Engine Mounts? (Though there is no vibration in the car, no movement on the shifter, etc...)
Exhaust touching somewhere? (Perhaps, though I have not noticed the car being louder inside than usual)
Something lying underneath the engine in the cover plate? (I can't see there, though why only when the car is in gear?)
If anyone has an idea as to why this is happening it would me much appreciated.
Jeezzz...I've got the same thing. Its been driving me nuts...just cant find where its coming from. Only while accelerating under load...only with windows open, especially driving past objects for the sound to bounce off.
Sorry I cant help though, believe me, I wish I could, but free bump anyways.

I had a similar sound on my 88 corolla MT I had years ago.
It was a clinking noise, that I could hear as u guys have described. Drove me nuts trying to figure out what it was.
It ended up being, noise from some cheap ass pep boys plastic hub caps I'd bought to try to make it look better....Good luck finding a solution to ur noises guys!

@ROBS: Thanks for the bump! Just as a process of elimination: Was the clutch worn at all? It might be coincidence, but the noise started out when the clutch started acting up... Now that the clutch is almost completely gone, the noise is at it's worst! Louder than it ever was... Don't know...
@eyeball96: I thought this might be the case as well, so I took off the hub-caps and drove around the block (so as to be sure no-one would see the car as "bare" as that...) but still the noise persisted...
I will be removing the cover plates underneath the engine over the coming weekend and see if there is anything there that might be causing it.
this might be a stretch, but i had a similar problem on a tempo i use to own. it only rattled when the car was in gear, and more so when i accelerated. turned out to be a heat shield over the exhaust in the center of the car came loose and rattled against the exhaust. apparently when the car was in gear or accelerating, it shifted the exhaust to make contact. this is just a thought.

that can be the issue, I just removed the heat shield and the rattle went away.

It is not the clutch, cuz I just replaced it and the rattling is still there. I am pondering about my exhaust manifold. It is known the the bolts on there loosen up and the rattle starts after 2000RPM. That is my assumption right now.
The sound does drive me mad sometimes, but since I put an SRI it drowns it out. But I still need to fix it.

I also had this same issue. It could be the heat shield, although I am not sure if that's what you were referring to in this statement...

If not then check the heat shield

No, I have an automatic.
I was thinking the exhaust heat shield as well, but the front one isn't loose at all...now, I cannot reach the rear one and haven't had time to try to get at it from underneath the car, so it might be that.
Its just strange that it started out of nowhere a couple months after buying the car.

That is exactly what happened to me. If removing the exhaust shield, would I be able to reach the bottom end?? Or do I need to jack the car to at least attempt a fix??
You bother me kelly with ur wild australian ways. i did a google search for australia and now i know where it is and im keen to head "down under" and hopefully look under the hood of your gen 2... if you know what i mean.. anyway just pm me your adress. hear from you soon kelly.X0X0X0XXX....
Hey guys. Sorry for digging up this old thread and for the... EXTREMELY late reply, but I still have not found the cause of this issue. After reading a bit of what you guys mentioned, I tried a couple of things:
1. The problem still persists only on a certain engine speed. (2100 to about 2800 RPM)
2. Same thing happens when I let go of the accelerator. It sounds as if there's a nut loose somewhere that's falling around... Picture a can of spray-paint.
3. I completely removed all of the heat sheilds and that didn't fix the problem either.
4. I replaced all of the rubbers that I could find holding the exhaust under the car, and this didn't help at all.
The only thing left to try is removing the whole friggin' exhaust and see if the noise goes away.
Did any of you actually sort out your issues? My initial suspicions around the clutch has also been eliminated as I had it replaced quite a while back.
