3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
99 Camry with about 225'000 KM's and getting alot of noise from rear mostly rattling and clunking !
Sway bar bushing replaced with original toyota parts a year ago.
Sway bar links replaced but with a cheap pair from EBAY a year ago. Very little movement or none!
2 Rear Monroe Sensatrac Struts replaced 2 month ago which are replacement under warranty a year later.
2 New Tires on Front everything solid. Also when on the highway going over 100 KM, whenever I turn to the left slightly the car sways back and forth
Is it possible for this to be more than bad sway bar links. Any ideas on what to look for or try??? By the way, I find the monroe strut not so great especially in cold weather and I have also read that other toyota user have had trouble with noisy struts from Monroe!!! GREAT
I think one of both of your rear mounts are wasted, but I'm sure others may chime in and agree or send you in a different direction. The ones on my wife's 99 (see sig below) have been in need of replacing for a year or so.

Just an update to let everyone know...I had oil change done and asked guys to check out all the suspension front and back...came back that I had 2 rear sway bar links gone and 2 front sway bushings getting bad!
Soooo, I just finished replacing my rear sway bar links and a little quieter but still getting rattling noise from the dang struts I'm assuming( how they rattle not sure) ....like was mentioned probably mounts, other than that everything else is solid and I will let the garage do the front bushings later in fear of breaking off those stubborn bolts in the frame......haha! Anybody got any other ideas or some other way to quite them struts let me know!! THANKS DUDES AND DUDETTES...LET'S BOUNCE!!!
That's the same problem I think I have with my 96 Camry. If you replace the rear strut mounts, let us know because I am curious about the rattling I'm getting from my car's back end
Matt

Just an update on the problem I was having...figured it out! It isn't struts or mounts at all but it was actually a control arm or a suspension arm bushing so bad that you could shake the rear wheel and it felt like a wheel bearing gone but it would clunk , bang and rattle and actually resonate through the whole rear suspension and make you think it was on both sides! If you have some play in a wheel moving from side to side check your 2 control arms and just a tip if you do need them replaced, make sure to get both arms just in case and also the 2 bolts and nuts since they were well seized in there! Anyways hope this helps someone out!!!

This sounds EXACTLY like my car problem. how hard/easy are they to replace?

Very easy to replace, but even easier to test. Jack up the rear of the car and support it safely on jack stands. Then grab each rear wheel at 3:00 and 9:00 and try to move the wheel front to back and in and out. There should be no movement. If this is your problem, chances are you may even hear the noise. It's usually the rear most "lateral control rod" also called "control rod number 2" that goes bad. That's the one with the sleeve for adjusting the rear alignment. The bushing in it goes bad and produces the noise. You need to replace the whole rod and have the car realigned.

I did a simular test like this last night and could replicate the sound EXACTLY. So I'm almost positive this has to be my problem.
Funny that the ASE certified mechanic I paid to look at it did this test and told me it was my wheel hub bearing that was bad. I just replaced those and it still makes the sound so I know he was full of shit.

Thanks a TON!
You can probably stick your head under there (again with the car jacked up and safely supported by jackstands) and have someone move the tire/wheel in and out for you. You will probably be able to see and hear the rubber bushing moving and the metal to metal sound you have been experiencing.

Got any idea where I can get these bushings? I called checker and napa and they dont even carry them nor could they get them. I called the toyota dealer and they only sell them with a whole new control arm. Do you have a part number handy?? or know where I can order them?
thanks
To my knowledge the bushings aren't sold separately from the whole control rod. When this happened to me, I had to bite the bullet and buy the whole control rod from Toyota at aropund $160. Sory I don't have better news.
