((What would you do)) question about struts and 189k car :P 00' camry
Hey, i have a 2000 camry, with struts and springs that are original, and was told by tirekingdom that they are going to need to be replaced, and they were cupping my tire. Well, they said they would replace the struts for like 400 inc taxes.
Would you:
Have struts only replaced?
Struts and springs (might as well cause they're in there?)?
Struts, springs and the strut mounts?
Also, do you think 400$ is good for the struts replacement, he says hes only charging me for parts and not labor, and im getting a deal, so i dunoo...
Thanks guys
And thanks for helping on my DIY break replacement, it went cherry perfect :P
How many miles on the car, what type of driving, freeway, bumpy roads, was the car over loaded weight wise? Are all tires cupping, front/rear, just one tire? Is this total amount for all 4 struts?
Many things can cause cupping. Unbalanced tire, bad wheel bearing, worn suspension parts, weak springs and worn out shocks/struts.
Push down on the front end (or corner) of the car several times to get it moving up and down then release. The front end should stop moving after two strokes cycles or less.
Normally springs don’t ‘wear out” unless overloaded (excess weight) or suppose a LOT of bumps and potholes. Are the springs sagging, as in the car body is lower then normal?
Struts cost $50-70+ each depending on brand and quality.

if your car has a lowered look with stock suspension, especially at 189k i would definately change the shocks. i bet your springs are probably bad because of the load it has been taking with bad shocks. so i would change both while you are at it. i had a 97 camry got it to about 190k before i sold it and i replaced my shocks twice and i lowered my car so i changed springs once. i hate the feeling of crappy suspension so i change it asap, probably a bit too soon the second time =). as in the price i only had tokico blues and those cost around 400 for the set and i installed myself. im not sure if yours is a good deal because we do not know what kind of struts they are replacing them with. if you are looking to save money then just change shocks and you will notice a big difference(you bottom out all the time anymore im assuming). if you can, just stick with OEM.
