What is this?

Planning on putting a cone air on the stock air pipe. Upon removing the air box I notice the ???? component in the pic leaves only a small hole about 5/6 of an inch in diameter of the original pipe. The thing has wires into it.

My questions are what is that? Do I need it? How about the resonator? How do I need to patch the pipe up upon removing the resonator?

This is on a v6 1mzfe.

That document states the MAF is for the ECM to calculate engine load, ignition and what not. So I guess it's critical...? Aftermarket pipe doesn't need this thing so...

^^ wrong

you need that. just about every aftermarket manufacturer of intakes will have the pipe come with a section cut out just so that it fits the MAF sensor.

ha! that's your Mass Air Flow sensor or MAF. Yes, it's important, if you unplug it the engine has to revert to speed density mode and will throw a check engine light. That is the primary sensor for dictating your fuel metering. Throw it away and your car will barely drive.

As for the resonator, it's not necessary, and most afm pipes delete them, but I hear they do help with low-end torque. They also quiet the intake down. I blocked mine off by taking the resonator into home depot, finding a rubber cap that fit over it, then hacking the neck off and clamping it back in place with the cap clamped over the end. I'm sure there are much cleaner ways, but it worked.

No wonder why the pipe is so expensive.
