Odometer Problem

I've got a 96 toyota camry 2.2 liter, automatic transmission. I track my mpg religiously.... I noticed it had been creeping up and wondered what was going on.... I'm getting 44 - 49 mpg!!

I decided to do an odometer test to see if my trip mileage was askew... I set the cruise to 60 mph and watched the clock for exactly 60 seconds. Trip odometer read 1.6 miles.... Hmmmm.. That doesn't sound right. Should have been exactly 1 mile...

Anyone have any ideas? This is a mechanical gauge, so there's not much to go wrong.

You might try to calibrate it against a known distance as well. If you have a highway with mile markers on it do the same test. You should clear one mile in 60 secs at 60 MPH. It seems odd that the odometer and speedometer didn't match up. I always thought that they both used the same input (sensor wire goes from transmission speed sensor to the "combination meter" (speedometer) and then to the ECU) so I would expect them to sync up whether wrong or right.

If the ECU recognises a problem the OD light should flash to tell you that you have a stored code.

You'll need to check your speedometer and odometer at the same time.

Get onto a relatively flat section of interstate with minimal curves, set your cruise control for whatever (65, 70, etc), and with a stopwatch time how long it takes to go some period of miles. Figure out the average number of seconds per mile, then divide that number into 3600. That's your actual speed in miles per hour. Also check your odometer over that distance.

Example: You pass by mile marker 100 and hit the start button and odometer trip reset button. At mile marker 105 you stop the stopwatch and check the trip counter. On the stopwatch you see that you the file mile trip took four minutes and fifteen seconds. Four minutes fifteen seconds = 255 seconds, or 51 seconds per mile. 3600 / 51 = 70.6. If your speedometer was reading between 70 and 71 your odometer is working great. Your odometer should be accurate.

For what it's worth, my Camry's odometer is accurate but my '99 Honda Accord's odometer is off by 5% to 6%. When it reads 75 mph I'm actually going 71, when it reads 80 mph I'm doing 75 mph. Of course I haven't told this to my wife... (so she thinks she's speeding when she really isn't)
