Installing Half Axles

Is there any one out there with experience at how to replace these? I am in the middle of replacing both sides and the Chilton guide I have only goes to 1992 and mine is a 1995. A buddy owns the 92 and my car seems to be different than the his guide. I called the local dealer and they stated that my car was a 4ect type. Not in my guide. What the problem is the driver side, do you remove the 6 bolt housing at the tranny? How do you free the transaxle? Pass side, what is best way to remove original snap ring with no holes in it?

If it's anything like the 94, for the drivers side you just pop it out with a pry bar (after moving the hub assembly out of the way). For the passenger side, the snap ring is compressed with pliers - that's not the hard part. These axles are usually frozen in the rear engine mount bearing.
This thread talks about the issues in pretty good detail. Clutch Replacement Write-Up
The first page talks about the driver side (Part II, Post #1) and page 2 talks about the passenger side starting at post # 19. Hope this helps.

If normal pliers can not do the job there are snap ring pliers having a longer, thinner nose. Grab the two tangs of the ring that stick up at each end and squeeze together, then pull out.

Also remove the bolt under the mount.

Once bolt and ring are removed the axle should slide out easily. If not, as Greggf states the bearing may be frozen in the housing.

When replacing CV drive axles, stuck axles are a common problem and the most likely thing to make your repair job grind to a halt. If it doesnt come out with reasonable force, the last resort is to use a slide hammer (from harbor freight they are $10 or 20), some chain and a nut and bolt to beat them out with the slide hammer.
