3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hi guys,
I found this site to be of great help for info on choosing a toyota and fixing them but this one i'm at a loss.
My family bought a 92 camry v6 not too long ago but it came with a whole round of problems. After going through each one, our lastest problem is the whole enging area shaking when we try to step on the gas at around 40mph. What we have to do is accelarate fast enough before it and skips the 40s to get to 50mph so it'll be smooth.
I'm hoping it's not the tranny. The problem before the shaking was an oil leak somewhere. We tried replacing the valve cover gasket but this didn't solve the problem and then the shaking came.
Well it could be the torque mount or your wheel balancing could be bad. Or in the extreme case, your alignment could be way way off on different things one each wheel. Which reminds me anyone know of a great place to take wheels to get balanced in the balitmore area? This is the 5th time tomorrow that I will be getting them balanced.......

sorry it took long for a reply. Just finished a semester of school.
I don't think it's the motor mounts but we'll be checking into it. Replaced the motor mounts for a 94 camry because it was shaking when the acceleration pedal is stepped on.
This v6 '92 camry shakes only at 40-50mph. I'm wondering how does mounts or balancing can be the cause if it shakes at specific speeds.
If those are not the causes, is the fourth gear the root of the problem?
Since it is only at this particular speed I tend to suspect that you have some sort of emissions control glitch. Do you notice any difference with a cool engine vs the engine up at operating temp? Does it always happen?
I believe this model has an OBDII port. Have you pulled the error codes? Sometimes they are there even if the CEL isn't flashing. Often local auto parts stores will pull OBDII codes for free. Call around.
It doesn't make any sense to me but since this started right after you renewed the valve cover gasket I would clean out the PCV Valve.
I think that I would go ahead and clean the EGR Valve and Modulator as well as thoroughly clean out the throttle body next. If this doesn't help then I think you will need to start testing some of the other sensors.
Keep us posted,
Kep

Ok, we think we found where the oil leak is coming from. I don't know the name of the parts but if you were looking at the valve cover, on the right side below the valve cover gasket there's a circle and the bottom half of the circle is where we think it's leaking. Any suggestions on solving that problem? (I haven't checked yet with methods of solving this and i'll post a picture soon)
We've yet to do anything but try to pin point the oil leak.
We're currently going to replace the brakes of a 94 camry.
In the mean time I'll be checking on locating the parts Kep mentioned and see if I can clean those. A while back someone we know figured many of the problems came from the electronics system so I'm convinced that it could be the emissions control. So, some time this week I'll try calling some shops and see if I can get a free check.
Remember to use oxygen sensor safe products when you clean and patch things. I've heard of that semi-circular piece leaking before but if you try to use some silicone to patch it make sure the tube has some sort of clause on there indicating that it is safe for O2 sensors.

(After coming from my vacation) I found recently that the car doesn't shake anymore. But I'm still pretty sure it could happen. There is a leak still somewhere. Today I went to go check for OBDII codes but the places don't have the right tools. So i'm still looking for a place.
I'm looking for a info on how to clean the parts and after I do, I'll keep this updated.
The Camry is a car that I can rip out someone's pride, stab it, beat it, and completely bash their egos, and it's so ridiculous that the person comes back with a hysterical laugh... ROFL They got trainlengthed by a Camry that in their mind, was a 18 sec car.
