Fuel Economy!

ok, i'm doing my experiment with the fuel economy for my Gen3 I4 camry

I have a Weapon-R Secret Intake ...and 4 alloy wheels

Last week I filled up with cheapest canadian Gasoline, today I am almost running out of gas.

I am getting 450 km out of the tank of gas
or 280 miles.

camry fuel tank is around 60 litres...well, at least that's how much I use..i never fill to the neck or drive with gas light on...I fill as soon as gas light comes on.

this comes down to 17.5 miles / gallon
OR 7.5 km/litre

This however, is ENTIRELY local driving with a lot of idling involved.

I suppose this is not all that bad

REMIND YOU, canadian gasoline has 8-10% ethynol in the regular fuel.
I believe this gives bad gas mileage...somebody in the US please conduct the same experiment and post the results

The NEXT stage of the experiment is to fill up the tank with PREMIUM fuel
WITHOUT any ethynol. I'm going to check for gas mileage again and IF there is a 15% gain of gas mileage, i'm going premium LOL

i believe our camrys are NOT designed to take a mixture of gasoline and ethynol...this is why i'm doing this experiment.

I'll keep this updated, please tune in and give feedback

hmmm.....that's pretty bad gas mileage for a 5sfe....do you drive it fairly hard?

Back before boost and my 5speed, I could still get 450 out of my v6 with fairly hard driving. With boost, all in-town driving went down to about 400km, and now with the 5-speed, I'm back to 450km even in-town.

as for difference in gas mileage- I haven't seen any difference since I came down to the states. But I always use 93 octane down here and 94 octane in Canada. The only time that I REALLY see a gas mileage difference though, is when the gas stations switch to winter gas....

That's exactly why i'm posting this, US gasoline gives better gas mileage because their 93 octane DOES NOT contain any ethynol

I do drive hard though...i rev to 3000 from stop to 60 usually....but i bet most of us do...

I guess we'll know soon enough when I come back and start using the canadian ultra94. I don't remember my gas mileage ever changing just because I came down to NYC though.

I keep track of all my gas mileage anyway though, so it won't be too hard to figure it out just by looking through my gas logs

well, mind you though, the camry's V6 does not use significantly more gas than the I4 if you run highways

and i think my engine isnt as well as yours...it burns oil.

higher octane fuels are only going to yield better economy if your engine can detect knock and advance the timing based on this. My Grand Prix has two different spark advance tables and based on which fuel I run it will decide which table to use. The low octane table has all the timing values in boost cut more than 60%, but the normal driving values remain close to the same.

I don't think your 5s has a knock sensor, so premium won't do you any good unless the regular you are buying is total crap.

But 17 mpg is awful, you should be able to do 20 EASY regardless of what octane gasoline you run. Ethanol also increases fuel octane, it really shouldn't have a big effect on economy. Cars that run on E85 do suffer a loss in Economy but you can run higher ignition advance and milk the higher octane (around 100) for what it's worth.

Also the power to weight ratio. I'm going to be honest, I get 27-29 miles per gallon. Don't ask how I just do. Mostly all of my driving is highway so there is not a lot of stop and go. Each time you go from a complete stop to any speed, a I4 is going to have a harder time with the weight of the camry compared to the V6.

My 93 I4 gets 400 miles to the tank (usually about 16 gallons fill up) which is usually about 24-25mpg...and I havent even done a full clean out of the EGR and throttle body yet! It even needs new plugs soon. The EGR has never been cleaned out since day 1 of the car's life.

Wow....if I was getting 17.5 mpg I would just drive my full size GMC truck! I just filled up yesterday and was surprised to get 29 mpg on my 97 5SFE auto, usually I get about 26-27. We have 10% ethynol and should see a decrease in mileage but not 17.5 mpg.

Have you ever check your pcv valve? Changed the fuel filter? Changed the spark plugs? Short Ram Intake really doesn't increase gas mileage, it decreases especially if you drive it hard. And you said that the car looses oil? Blown headgasket or whatever?

Meh, an intake isn't really going to do much for our cars period.

You guys that are getting less than 20 mpg need to lay off the gas pedal or get a tune up... something

I can push 28 mpg in my Camry on the highway, around 22 in the city and it's an automatic v6 with no EGR LoL... If you cant push over 22 something aint right there

It's possible to see 17.5 mpg I guess, but it would mean a massive amount of stopping/idling. When you're not moving, you're getting exactly ZERO miles per gallon (or km per liter).
