let it shift around 2 grand and below. slow acceleration. tune up. remove all the un-necessary weights.

I had that similar question: Does the car use more gas when you downshift compared to if you were to just brake and leave it in gear? Some people said it would consume gas when the RPM's rise and others said that the engine only uses more gas if you are accelerating. Any thoughts?
To the OP:
1. Regular maintenance
2. Take anything out of the car that you don't need
3. Optimum tire pressure
4. No Air conditioning, keep windows up
5. Slow/light acceleration, drive the speed limit, slow down before stoplights, minimize braking
6. Keep the engine running at stoplights (if they're not too long)
7. Cruise control on fairly level roads
8. Drafting (not recommended)
9. Group trips together
There are a lot more but that's all I can think of at the moment.
I dont know man i got a automatic but i would think if you down shift it will rise your rpm alot and when your rpm's are high your burning more gas. but im not 100% positive about that tho.
Keep OverDrive on don't let rpm pass 2,000rpm. When accelerating from stop, try to keep it under 3,000rpm. Switch lane instead of slowing down behind car, avoid braking (still keep speed limit). Only set cruise control if you're going highway since the wind resistance will require the car to accelerate, in smaller road, just let the car rolls on its weight and tip a little gas if it goes slow. Having cruise control will work the engine nonetheless to maintain speed even though it doesn't need to -> waste gas.
it wont do anything. also, keeping slower on the highways saves alot too. but i say that and i never fallow the advice.
i tried that coming home from my parents, normally 2.5 hours (one way) drive ended up almost 3 hrs..
