1MZFE on regular fuel?

Sorry if this has been discussed recently, I haven't been very active on here like I used to be.

Just wondering if any of you V6 guys have experimented with using 87-89 instead of the recommended 91-92 premium. Gas is getting way too expensive, and I am thinking about ditching premium fuel and just start using 89.

Does the V6 react poorly to regular gas, or is premium not necessary as recommended? Is it worth the $0.20 difference?

Your car will do fine on regular (87 octane)

Yup the engine is designed to run on regular. It's quite nice with gas prices these days.

I'm running regular just fine. I think the coupes perform better with premium tho!

.....I add a can of seafoam, every 3rd tank or so, just to keep em happy!

You really think so? You're making me wonder if I should just put in premium now for my coupe...

I doubt you will notice the difference between premium and regular. If it can be run on regular, then use that.

I sometimes switch between regular and 93 octane. To tell you the truth, the only differences is that my car seems to start easier and there is a slight improvement on gas mileage.

The real question is if there is a gas mileage difference proportional to the price difference. I have always used 87 in it so I dont know the answer.

technically, if ya look at the owners manual its says 89 or higher, below that there are roumors of knock but i know plenty of people who have ran with 87 and had no problems, adam was one of them. ive never used 87 but used to only use 89 and it was fine, but not worth the 5 cents in the long run i found. i got better gas millage on long trips with the higher octane, around town wasnt as big a differeance. but my engine ran fine. again this was on 89 compared to the 91 or 93 i run now.

it'll run fine as long as you don't push the car

but if you want to push it...under load, it will knock. especially if it's hot out.

Just like eyeball said, they do perform better on premium fuel. I tried using 87 to same me $3 per full tank. On you second fill up(when 91 is complety gone) that's when you feel the difference in performance. Now I only use premium. It's 3 bucks more per fill up but it's worth it for me. You know what, why don't you try the 87 yourself and tell us your experience using it. If you don't feel any diff. then stick with it.

I am pretty sure Toyota recommends premium, but I'm not 100% sure. I will try 89 octane, since it's not that huge of a difference from 92 that I have always used. If it doesn't feel right, I will continue to use premium.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

been using it since the last or month or so... everything seems to be fine.. drive like a grandma and you'll be impressed by the mpg, at least it did for me.. went from 17-19 in city up to 22-23 mpg and high way went from 22-24 to 25-26 mpg... thats keeping the revv under 2000 rpms.
