3rd Generation Transmission sometimes slips, sometimes shifts hard

Hey everybody, I've been searching the forums and the internet on ANYTHING that could help me out... I've got a 1993 V6 Camry with 184,000miles and an auto transmission.

My problem has been this... initially at WOT, my transmission would slip when upshifting from 1st to 2nd. The shifts have gradually gotten very ....lazy.... would be my best description for the upshifts, I cannot feel them anymore. But now, sometimes I'll start out driving and the upshifts will be uncomfortably harsh, or completely normal. I checked my fluid level and there were 5 notches on the dipstick and I've lost my owners manual, where is the fluid level supposed to be at when warm?

Thanks for helping me with this!

Fluid level after driving on a warm engine was after the third notch if this helps...

In my manual, it shows the dipstick having four notches. I checked my car and it also has four notches (I4). It doesn't specify for for the I4 or V6 in the manual so I assume they are both the same. Was 5 a typo in your OP?

But it says in between the bottom 2 notches is where the level should be when the engine is cold. In between the top 2 for when the engine is warm. Hope that helps a little. If you want, I can throw up the pics from the manual if that'll help.

I was mis-counting... lol, there are only four notches so I have the recommended level. I guess it's just the age and mileage of my transmission.

its possibly that, or if you had a traNNy drain, the mechanic or yourself used the wrong kind of tranny oil. My bro (previous owner) sweared on a certain kind, and i called toyota, and they sweared on a different kind...

the mechanic whom i was buying the stuff for (a friend doign it for cheaper in a dodge dealership) said the tranny would slip if i put the wrong kind in, hence i used toyotas recomendation!

edit: i say this cause if ure at 180k, you must have had a change recently? i think its 90k, 180k, for the trans belt ands flush!
