4th Generation Timing Belt Urgent Help

Hey guys,

I got my timing belt replace on my 1999 Camry I4 at 151,000 miles. 10,000 miles and 10months later the car starts getting louder and then the belt breaks leaving me stranded on the highway.

With it still being under warranty, I bring it back to the dealer where I got it fixed because they warranty the work for 12,000 miles. They look at it and say what happened was there was excessive play in the water pump pulley. This in turn damaged the crank pulley and the tensioner. Total cost said is going to be around $1,100 USD to fix this.

What should I do, get it fixed and drop that money load or what?

that is a lot of money for what has to be done. they should have recommended you replace the water pump when the timing belt was done - they are usually replaced at the same time. i would argue the cost. how much did they charge you for the timing belt?

in any event, you should get it done. cars dont hold much value if they arent running.

They charged me around 270 to get the belt done originally, if I remember correctly the did not touch the water pump.

They should have replaced the water pump at the time of the Timing belt change, so they kinda set u up...they knew the water pump would go....a local dealer here did the same thing to my daugters 99 5sfe...exactly the same thing happened to her.

It cost her 666 bucks to make things right again.....I suggest u find another mechanic!

Just curious. What Chicago area Toyota dealer is this?

I too suggest you call around to independent mechanics and ask for their price to do the same work, or try to negotiate with the dealer based on the premise that they should have suggested replacing the other parts when they did the timing belt 10,000 miles ago. The car would have had around 141,000 miles back then.

Planet Toyota of Matteson IL. I had the timing belt changed at 151,000ish miles, noted by the sticker. The car is now at 161,000ish miles.
